What shape track is dirt-track?
« on: April 03, 2013, 06:29:30 pm »
Hey Guy's,  If this property purchase comes-off, I'd like to put in a dirt-track aswell as a couple of motocross tracks.  Are dirt-tracks all a set shape?  I've only ever seen the kidney shaped one at Broadford with two lefts and one right.

I'm thinking it'd be cool to have a sliding surface but have an equal amount of lefts & rights?

I like your thinking John and would love to see it happen, for DT's future.
Apart from being flat you need at least one right hander, if you have room a Speedway loop would be good as would a Longtrack.
Good luck with it mate I hope it works out for you.

Hey John,
The DT at canberra also goes up a bit of a hill and the corners seem a little bit banked to me. Awesome fun.
We all had better start saving old sump oil for john! That should get him in good stead with the local greenies.

That's the one , Steve,
John, IMO a kidney with a loop around the outside for longtrack and shorter Speedway/ Short Track cut-off would be the go.

Good point Brett, it don't matter if it's up or down hill or banked, just no jumps, thats what I meant by flat.
If you build it, they WILL come.

Here is a good example of an undulating terrain track.

This is a Google view of our beloved Nepean track. The start chute is bottom left and it goes anti-clockwise.

Thanks Mark, so for traditional dirt-track, would they use the lomg track around the outside with the left, right, left at the end of the start straight?

Start....turn left into esses......turn left onto long straight....turn left through sweeper and that's one lap out of the way ;). The full long track is no longer used as can be seen by the slight grass overgrowth. It was discontinued as the shape proved to be wrong causing problems with the exit onto the straight plus the speed factor rode appreciably raising safety concerns. Apparently there are moves to redesign the corner and use the full long track for flat track and long track speedway.
