Wanted ktm 540 two stroke
« on: March 29, 2013, 09:55:39 am »
Hi - bought a ktm 540 exe two stroke new in 1990 i think, not to many of that model sold , they were 70hp --- extremely fast bike, i sold it few years later, would like to know if its still around to this day , anyone who bought such a bike from Melb. SE Subs in 90,s -- fairly sure the bike went up North, drop me a line   -- i would have a record of the full Victoria Registration number i think, this bike was  just as fast as my Husaberg 2005, but the big four stroke would out do it on top end. Thanks

yeah they had a terrific engine. i rode one in an mx side car and was amazed at the grunt it had with 2 onboard. always wondered what a solo would have been like.

Yes out of all moped engines the 540 was the best . I had two of them and they never failed . So much more grunt than a Honda or Kawasaki . Was yours 4 or 5 speed?  I still have the partlist and a few parts for them if you need something .
My bike was 5 speed & i bought a race pipe for it which raised the Rev ceiling & gave it more of a Power Band, had a serious appetite for drive chains & rear tyres, i think thats why i sold it as it let me down few times in the middle of no where, but i had fun on that bike & friends would say it sounded like a jet

Hi,
Had the pleasure to ride one these ,was actually called a "550 SX", I supposed that meant supercrosser
,in 1992? at a KTM ride day at Veresdale , what a absolute rocket, you needed broad shoulders and big plums to hang on to one of these, way too much bike for this skinny old white man, I think thats why  Liesk and Armstrong chose to ride the  four strokes.

Weapon of choice for sidecar crossers in the late 80's -if you couldn't afford a Jumbo.
I think Popeye is trying to rebuild one as we speak-in a Wasp that is.

i know theres probably no way your own bike would end up there, but the Alice Springs KTM dealer may be worth a shot for a 540/550, they had heaps of big bore Katos up there for the desert races etc.
