Cheney Yamaha, at last!
« on: June 10, 2008, 04:31:46 pm »
After giving up on ever seeing my Cheney Yamaha, I finally picked it up on Friday. I purchased it in early January and the bike was sent in three packages from Massachusetts on January 19. It then promptly dropped off the radar. It was supposed to arrive in early March and even though the packages were shown on the manifest list, they didn't arrive. I was too busy trying to finish the Hindall Ducati for CD6 and worrying about my very ill mother to even think of the Cheney until early May. I then rang the Shipping agent in California and spoke to a lovely lady by the name of Cama who promised she'd find it for me. It was eventually found in Rotterdam, Holland. It appears that it was placed on the wrong pallet by a casual worker who had subsequently been fired. In the end, all is well and I'm more than happy with it. Paul the guy I bought it off had earlier sent me the tank, seat and all of the bolt-ons by mail and I'd sent the tank to Geoff Morris at CMC who did a magic job de-denting and polishing it.

I've already built a new 360 RT1 engine featuring a NOS GYT Barrel, ARP head, GYT pipe, 34mm Mikuni, Skunk Works inlet manifold, YZ250A clutch, DT2MX transmission and sidecovers (the ones with no Yamaha name tags) and DT400 cdi ignition. I also got what appears to be a good tight engine with the bike so I have two 360 and a 250 engines plus another 360 in pieces.
I'll be using Rickman Hubs/Borrani rims, the same as on my Ducati, alloy fenders, Doherty steel levers, grips and sidepull throttle. I'll dispense with the trick shocks on this build and use a pristine pair of steel Konis that were on my Ducati. The ceriani forks seem great so I'll only do the polish and seal treatment first up and if I decide to race her I'll get Walter to wave his magic over them. I'm currently refitting my shed so all of my projects are in hibernation until that little operation is over. As soo as that happens I'll pop the Cheney up onto the stand and get into it. This is going to be a sweet motorcycle

Up and away Firko!  ;)    Rotterdam Holland> Syderney Australia. Easy mistake >:( Cheers and take care Tim.
I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Great news Firko , you gotta love it when a plan comes together. Sounds like you have sourced the best components for this build. Good luck with the build looking forward to some progress pics.

Great Mark! I remember at CD5 that you'd almost given it up as lost forever. If it looks half as nice as your Ducati and goes half as good as your Maico 350 it'll be a ripper. Did Jonsey get his Wassell yet? I hope my Mead frame will leave England soon so I can get the B44 done before CD6 or the rumoured CD style event at Broadford. Gotta add to the KK shiny bike brigade. :-*

Yamaboy..Alans Wassell arrived down here from Roly Leahys on the same pallet as my Cheney. It's a plain little thing but once he adds the proposed Bridgestone 175 engine and his customary bling it'll be like Cinderella at the ball. That'll be a nice B44 with the Terry Mead frame. I reckon they're the nicest of the Beeza aftermarket frames.

I've  only heard rumours myself Paul. There was talk of a CD style event at Broadford run by MA but I don't know anything other than that.

Hey Firko,

Now I know why you haven't brought the 250 Duke engine to BUshy Glen Engine Works - You folks at Whalan are friggin well snowed in, lmfao !!!

That Cheney looks like it is going to be well worth the wait, given it being such a well travelled bike and all. I will watch it's progress with interest.

Give me a call about the engine will ya.
