For pre 75 MX sidecars what are the specific rules regarding suspension? I guess I want to know what the ASA go’s by but I’m not sure if their rules are any different.
With a leading link are you allowed to have a swing arm with a bend in it (banana) or does it have to be straight?
Are there rules on where the bottom shock mount can be on the front swingarm?
Is there a limit on front suspension travel? If so how is it measured, shock travel or wheel travel?
Also on the rear end is there any limits there on travel?
Are remote reservoir and piggy back shocks allowed? I assume they wouldn’t be but are gas charged emulsion or de-carbon type non reservoir shocks allowed? Do the shocks have to be a period brand from back then or can they be any modern type non reservoir shocks?

Pre 75 Basically Seven inches up front and four inches at rear same measuring as a solo type.  You can run solo telescopic   of course if you want .I have proof of "banana bends front and rear for pre 85 on not in pre75... Remote reservoirs or decarbons ,pre 75 NO ! except the old Yamaha pre75 ones (Thermaflo or something?? who cares they were ugly pus). Leith to be safe review the Pre75 solo suspension regs in the MOMs. Then read the Classic sidecar section and the Sidecar general section this will fill you in.
Early type Disk brakes up front  OK Remember in Australia a lot of outfits were "Home Built Specials   " or part HBS* part factory built like mine, that were based on road bikes. So you do have a bit of free license where you put or mount this and that. Having said that they still are a bloody evil body wrenching handful usually to ride no matter what you do ... ;)
Now you see why I call mine when asked what brand of outfit it is,  a "HBS/Honda" or HBS/Wasp  ;)

The rules are pretty clear , front swing arms straight . 7 inches wheeltravel including bumpstop , no reservoirs (piggyback or on hose). The first banana swingarms came out 1980. Disc brakes and Master  permitted as long as they are from period ( pre 75). Yamaha , Honda , Kawasaki , Suzuki .
Rear has to be drum ( only exclusion Rokon wheel and Lockhead) . Rear wheel travel 4 inches including bumpstop
no piggyback or remote reservoirs.  The rule book can be no clearer than that.

My only comments would be that the MOMS say "for Pre 75 .......any frame may be used.... and comply with the following" were it goes on to talk about track, suspension brakes etc. I guess the interpretation should be - do your best to keep it as the Pre75 was intended. Meaning looks and capability.

whats MOMs? is that the GCR book?

so its no reservoir type shock at all but gas charged non reservor shocks are ok

suspension is in wheel travel and not shock shaft travel is that right?

and no bannaa swingarms  :( thats a bugger. we got a Triumph 500 homebuilt outfit that was a real gem thats been in pieces for about 15 years and it has a front end copied from the first VMC that came to Australia and also uses a few little bits based on EML but now thats a no no and we would have to build a whole new front end more in pre 75 style. which kinda sucks as the way it was it handled great. Its just an idea as we would like to help contribute to the home built pre 75 sidecar numbers as there isnt many racing at the moment. will see what happens.

its already got XS/TX 650 disc brake so we are already right there. would need to get 5 new shocks though unless my Fox ones end up being stiff enough.

We still have a few rule complying new and used Wasp  1975 front ends . Also some Wasp shocks that comply with rules. All stuff that can go at the right price . First VMC made was 1985  and first EML made was 1977 , so both of those copies or originals would not comply with the rulebook. I will bring an original new 74 Wasp RT 2 to CD 5 where you can have a good look at it.

yep this one was copied directly off a 85 VMC so we would need to build a more period leading link then which is no problem as we just built one for a Moto guzzi road outfit and finished it today. you can now ride it down the road at 120 clicks, take you hands off the bars and it keeps going in dead straight line ;D why would anyone wanna ride one with the stock front forks.

We still have the jigs of the 1974 wasp front ends , that way you will have no risks in looks , handling or elegibilty , as they are identical. Material used is 4140 Aircraft tube
