VMX Characters
« on: February 19, 2013, 11:03:27 pm »
I'm still going through my transparency (slides) files and have come accross some great vintage motocross stuff from the 80's/90's, the Cherabah Nats (both of 'em),the 02 Ravenswood Nats and a few from the Port Pirie Nats that survived my flooded garage. I'll post 'em when I find a lazy hour or two. In the meantime I uncovered some shots of a couple of the true characters that our sport has produced..............

Barry Senn was one of those likeable Kiwis that often crossed the ditch to race here, sometimes on Dave Tanners RH tackle, sometimes on his own RH 74 or whatever he could bludge. I got to know him pretty well and really liked the bloke. He had a great collection of exotic RH Suzukis, YZA/B Yamahas and other great stuff. The bugger could ride too but unfortunately he was killed in a racing accident a few years ago and the sport's a lesser place because of his passing.

Bill Brown has been around VMX since he attended the first official VMX meeting at Amaroo Park in 1988 as a spectator. By the next meeting he'd picked up a clean 69 250 GP Montesa and he went right through it with Gary Treadwell porting and a lot of trick stuff. Bill and his trusty Monty were the very first pre 70 Nationals winners with wins at Dargle in 1992, the following year at Ravenswood against a class field and to finish off his motocross exploits on the bike, another pre 70 win, again at Ravo in 2002 with a broken cocyx achieved in a second moto hard landing. Bill is often the last bloke standing at the bar, he's the loudest and funniest bloke at any meeting and has a story to suit every occasion. Most of this decade he's limited his racing to dirt track due to health issues that nearly took him out....he lost a kidney to cancer a few years ago but he's still bloody quick on the old Monty. He's the only vintage racer that's raced only one bike for his entire time in the sport that I can recall. Bill's a good mate to many racers in our sport, once you've met him you'll never forget him. VMX could do with a lot more characters like Billy Brown.
