I 100% agree with Mont.
Definitely lace the inner spokes first, then all the outer spokes. This prevents having to undo 3 or 4 spokes to get one laced in.

I learned that from trial and error.

I reckon all the tips here cover it off nicely. The final tension is one of the most important parts too....  :)

Yep, Ross is right. Inside spokes first. True radially before sideways. If the spokes are the correct length they will tell you when they are in the right holes. Give it a go Brendan. Doing it yourself is very rewarding.
Cheers, Grahame

Ah, so we're talking about feeding the spokes into the hub, rather than actually lacing them up to the rim.

In that case, I agree.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

First job on leaving school, [in a m/cycle shop] thinking i was going to be working on bikes cos i new all about replacing the throttle cable on my farm 'bantam' [used to break cable regularly], was assembling pushbikes. i mean 'assembling--none of this get em out of a box & bolt handlebars on. Started with a hub, spokes & rim & had a thingy to spin it in to make easier to true up both ways [up n down & sideways], god i did bloody hundreds it seemed. Had a reunion there a few years ago [dry cleaning shop now] & one woman who shall remain nameless said [i lost my virginity right there], wasn't damn well with me though!!. [just thought i'd share that with you]. Changing tact a bit, i have a couple on YZ/IT L type wheels with the 'strange' long spokes right through, [not] looking forward to rebuilding one of them [corroded away rims], might not be any worse to do than normal though.

Thats the Z spoke type wheels Morley, try and save the spokes as the only place in the world that has them are Buccannons in the States. Those rims Yamaha used around that period are shit, they corroid like there sitting in salt water. Hows Tim Gibbs going?
QVMX.....Australia's #1 VMX club......leading the way.

Hi above, Tim's doing ok considering he's touching 80 at last count. Pretty lame since a hip replacement a couple of years ago & struggles. He & Joan do many thousands of K's per year running their transponder laptiming set up at roadraces & lately jet sprint boats events & can watch some of these live on the day via 'ctas' who Tim's in conjunction with now. Just google [tim gibbes]. Cheers. ps, took a pic i'll put up sometime if i can find it where a young local 'fast' guy was riding my yz490k at the local 'johnny old' vmx [this was going back 'two' meetings not lat one & won the main big race of the day, anyway, i had the front tyre off sometime later & rim was just about corroded through--[you wouldn't know unless you went looking] bit of a worry. Also [rust never sleeps] my old 3 bike trailer from the "70's i was altering around recently & had the Duratorque axle/rubber spring assembly off & found the 3/8 mount bolts rusted down to about 1/4 where you can't see it inside the square tubing. Bit of a worry.
