1989 cr250 finding neutral

Hey guys while riding on the weekend my 89 started finding neutral.
Funny thing it does not jump into neutral when on the gas in 1st but if you are rolling in 1st it selects neutral. (Just as if it was up shifted)
If you rock the bike in 1st (when not running) it will drop into neutral.

All gears work fine and the oil seems ok.( no extra teeth in it)
I took a look at the shift mech and all looks ok?

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas before I split the cases?
I bought the bike as a rebuilt item and don't have any history on it. It runs perfect and looks the goods so I really hesitate to crack the cases open.

Any tips?

If it works the rest of the time no worries, maybe try moving the gear lever in case you are bumping it with your boots?

Hey Simo its not that.

If you have the engine off and bike in 1st , rock the bike forward and back it slides straight into neutral.
Same if you idle around in 1st. As soon as the motor slows it selects neutral

I kinda guessed that but thought that it was odd that it does not jump out off gear under power?

No familiar with them but talking generaly--most odd to stay in under load & fall out on the over-run. Have to be dog related--i'd be looking at both male & female doggies but still back to front to what would happen with warn dogs plus first gear would be the last to play up in any box [i'd think]. Thinking outside the square--not way too much end float in the output shaft like a washer's been left off the end!! or ummm [just found a parts pic] centre bolt holding drum "star" thingy come undone. Detent roller arm spring broken [would give indecisive changing though] selector bent from crash landing when in second & dogs hitting first gear wheel hard but not in the dog slots. I give up--back to front so will be something out of the ordinary especialy seeing it happened suddenly. Look forward to the final outcome. Cheers.

The detent spring and roller are ok.



The star thingy is tight?? I might remove it and look behind it as it is pinned from memory??

Makes me wonder if part 24 could have sheared?
