Can anyone tell me how a neutral light switch operates on old Suzi trail bikes? Thanks

this is a generic answer and not specific to old Suzuki's but i would assume when the bike is in neutral the switch contact will close (to be earthed) and when not in neutral it will be open (circuit not earthed).

this of course will be evident if there is only 1 wire on the switch.

The switch has a plunger that follows the indexing wheel on the shift drum

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering because the outside plastic cover has been repaired on my 400 and the connection for the wire is no longer there. I will have to get the gearbox i neutral and use the little arm that rotates to locate the position of the connection for the wire.

Not quite how I remember my T500s set up, it had a metal contact screwed to the end of the shift drum which made contact with a brass peg that had a thread for the wire in it
I would have thought that set up would have been common to all suzukis around that time due to it's simplicity

Yea Tony, now your talking. Thats exactly what I have. I just didn't know what should have been inside the cover and how  the tag would touch and make the connection.  Thanks

Whilst the pics below are from a different Suzuki model (3 mounting screws on the cover instead of only 2 for the TS400) the actual internal workings are the same ;)

The list below might help locate another cover rather than trying to repair the old one which could prove more trouble than it's worth.
