Firkos other new bike..DT2MX

I picked up this baby along with my new flat tracker yesterday. I bought it for a bargain $200 off Marks Swapmeet from a bloke who thought it was a DT1. Despite its ugly outer appearance the bike is a surprisingly complete and well preserved original DT2MX. The engine appears to have good compression, there's no chain damage on the cases, in fact there are no signs of butchery anywhere on the bike, the forks and wheels are in great condition with only one or two spokes showing any rust. I got an original tank and side panels with the bike (I haven't received them yet) so the only major things missing are the clutch actuator/sprocket cover, original handlebars and an original throttle to replace the rooted Swedish Gunnar Gasser. It's a matching numbers bike that appears to have been loved for most of its life. It's got a cool aftermarket muffler, good fork brace, an aftermarket decompressor and good S&W shocks with plenty of dampening. The downside is the plug ugly plastic tank, rooted seat (the base is fibreglass and can be easily repaired) and tatty mudguards that will be replaced with NOS or replicas. The original plan was to strip it for parts for one of my hot rod DT1's but now I've seen it it's way too good to break up. I'll either restore it to concourse originality or build it as a competitive 'poor mans YZ' serious pre '75 racer.......a third option is to sell it but that decision won't be made for a while yet.

The subject says DT2MX, is that a different model than DT1MX or DT250MX?

Jay the DT2MX was released in 1972 and is Yamaha's first production motocross bike not based on an existing trail bike like the DT1MX. Ther's no such model as a DT250MX....There's a DT250 and an MX250.
The DT2MX is a pretty unique bike in that the engine top end, transmission and outer cases are unique to that one model, different to the previous DT1 and the following YZ250A. In fact the frame and bodywork are also one make only parts, making the DT2MX the most unique and rare (10 month production only) of Yamaha's motocross range. They weren't a great bike but they were the first and are unique so for those points alone they deserve their place in history.

I already have Mick .....I also have more Suzuki's than Maicos and I don't have any particular affinity for Suzuki's
Funny how things roll eh?

Here's the last DT2MX I imported from the US. I sold it to Dave Alsop who sold it on to another bloke who is apparently doing a full resto on it. The new bike is much better than this one.

So do I. I've always liked them, perhaps because there were a couple of them at my local track, which did pretty well.

Actually called DT2M by Yamaha. The mags & public called em DT2MX.

IMO, they were a decent bike in 72, so much better than the DT1M. If you couldn't afford (or live with) a euro bike...

Great bike in their day the DT2/RT2MX, had one new [DT2MX] & just loved everything about it having got of a DT2 trail bike [DT2 on alky fuel but std cylinder but the DT1 GYT kit head & homemade pipe--went ok]. Boss had the 360 RT2MX but didn't like the light flywheel & roadrace [almost] type power so i fitted the old DT1 flywheel magneto & made it a hell of a lot nicer & easier on kickstart gears too. By memory my DT2MX had point ignition but a small inner rotor type--was trouble free. Thanks.
