Anyone had a hip replaced?
« on: June 07, 2012, 02:11:34 pm »
Hey Guy's, I go in to have a hip replaced on July 11, I was wondering when I might be back on the bike?  Anyone had the job done?

My step father had both done at once, magic operation, after 3 months or so he was playing golf after being crippled by pain

Ron Chadwick has had both his done. He is currently having blood tests to see if he has heavy metal contamination from the graphite or something that they had in them-he has been feeling crook for a while so his doc asked the question and some have given problems.
Hope this doesn't put you off Johnno but please check before you jump.
Another good friend that rides had his done 15 yrs ago and they were very worried that he would wear it out. He recently had what he described as 'broken leg like pains' and it was found that his leg had spun on the pin when he twisted around to pick something up. When he was opened up they found the hip joint in perfect condition and put that down to his fitness and the fact that he rides off-road so regularly-apparently the action of sitting and standlng whilest trail riding is the best exercise for the hips.

Partner's brother had one done and was up and walking 3 days later , has never looked back.
Friends wife , just this week , had one done, rolled over in bed and dislocated it.
Luck of the draw.

John,
Good luck with the operation, I am sure all will go well for you. Go for the Works Titanium "Roger DeCoster/Joel Robert" signature series.

I dislocated a hip in a MX crash back in 2000, and was off the bikes for best part of 12 months. Most painful thing ever. 3 hours later I was finally knocked out... then there was the 2 weeks of traction... :-\

Good luck with the surgery mate. I hear it's a pretty fast procedure these days. I will need my hip replaced in 10 years - so the surgeon warned me.

One question: What has caused you to need a hip replacement John?

From the surgeons looking at my xrays, the cushion in the joint is worn away; the xray shows the femeral ball hard against my pelvis; my right hip is not quite as bad; 38 years of motorcycle racing takes its toll I guess.

With worn out joints, I came back to MX after 25 years of roadracing, riding at our practise track that has lots of off-camber left-hand corners, I kept sliding-out and stressing the hip joint until now it wouldn't stop hurting.

According to my surgeon, age 52 is the average for a hip replacement in an active person.

Interesting to hear the 52yr average. I broke a right femur on some old man's Ford hood when I was ten. I remember getting set free about 3 months later and the Doc saying something about hip problems later in life due to the right being shorter than the left after it healed. Now a few months off 50 and it is giving me increasing probs. Do "Motion Pro" make one? As long as I can still get a leg over !

Good luck with the operation John...I have a mate who's had both hips done and he still rides bloody quickly. You'll be a few months out of the saddle but it'll be worth it. Any surgery that gives you back your mobility is a good thing. I'm getting a titanium knee later this year myself.

Thanks Guy's  :-)

I've had both my knee's done; best thing I ever had done; had em done 8 years ago, they said they'd only last 5 years if I was active; I've been dancin & ridin hard since having them done; I recently wore out one of the plastic bushes which I just had replaced; ready to go another 8 years  :-)
