Don't know if it's owned by anyone on here, I doubt it though. The frame appears to be a raked MX-2 (or even a TNT)which takes some value from it. If it had a genuine aftermarket short track frame like the Champion below it'd be a more desirable bit of kit. Still, with a nice paint job and a polish up this'd make a really potent racer, those Rotax engines are the ducks guts of pre 75 two strokes.
Here's a very sweet Champion framed Can-Am

My favourite Can am was a ice racer come flat tracker for sale maybe 8 years ago in canada. coolest looking bike i have even seen, was so close to buying it as my first import but just couldnt figure out how to get it over the border in the end.   I just loved the look of it, it was orange and black like a harley, even had the seat trimeds to matchi the paint scheme lines.

I  will suss out if i have a pic still somewhere.

I WOULDNT BE SURPRISED IF  the yamaha champion frame takes a Can am motor, i know the harly mx mounts straight in other than adjusting the rear shoe it could be an easy one to do.

That'd be it Davey, less engine parts = less resistance to movement = higher rev's.
Flattrack & Dirtrack involves more top end stuff with less gear changes required.
Most DT bikes pull out of the start in 2nd and sometimes even 3rd, then they never go any lower than that, every little bit helps.

pulling out 1st and gearing from second means you wont false pass neutral and launch in to first accidnetly and go over the bars on a corner if you have a fat boot.

As slidz says yoru really only in a gear out the gate, then another click into turn one and then another on the straight, you can usually hang onto this gear or top or maybe tip back one into a corner entry, so you really only play on 2 speeds for 90% of the race.  dirt track with right handers can change that a little and aslo if it got long straights like a 600m track.  but short track its a 2 speed race most of the time :D
