To my knowledge they were designed to deflect mud etc. away from the front mounted radiator on the H and J models. Peter.

billet yz
is right they were designed to deflect the mud and not clogging the rad but in aerodynamic terms it pushed air into the rad at a higher speed like an airoplane wing of sorts well that is what the yamaha tech guys said in the day i did have a yz 125 h with this fitted it did look trick but did it work i don't know if you what original this is a rare chance to get one.

I ran mine for the entire 1982 Enduro season on my YZ125J and never had any problems with overheating etc..
Even in tight enduros etc..
And it was a definite help in muddy events.
