I would buy a cable and run the pump. I never,ever, had a problem with mine in the 70's and my current one is happy with the pump.
To remove the pump and run pre-mix you need to remove the oil shield on the LHS main bearing and crank and drill a hole, through the case, from the LHS transfer area down to the outside of the main bearing. The flow of fuel/oil will be restricted to the main bearing otherwise.
You can run premix AND the oil pump on a very low setting with no throttle cable. Trouble is I don't know just where to set the pump to achieve this and you still need an oil tank
