Fuel Stabilisers and other additives
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:31:38 pm »
Thought I would ask the brains trust on fuel additives and if they have any benefits or risks when it comes to VMX or older bikes

Sta-bil -

Valve Saver - meant for 4 stokes but I have heard of people putting into 2 strokes to save rings (not sure if this was true or just a myth repeated by others)

Any others good or bad?

Cheers

They are a bit of a marketing scam/gimmick to make you feel warm and fuzzy. They dont do the same as what the lead did and they are not really needed. Speak to any people in the fuel industy on the chemsty side of things and they will confirm that. You would be much better off running more oil if you are one of those already running a low amount of oil in your premix. Same goes for those things you hang inside your tank or fit in the fuel line that are supposed to add lead into your fuel. On a high performance race 4T, yes you might want to run some upper cylinder lube or some caster oil to lube your valve guides.

Interesting sideline to this post.
Back when I was younger I was working as an engine reconditioner.
One of the jobs that came in was a cast iron crossflow falcon head off a taxi running gas.
The valves/seats had been running that hot and dry that it looked like the inlet inserts had fallen out.
No inserts in those heads but fitting some was easy because there was so little to machine out.
We just tidied up the holes and fitted hardened inserts. ;D
