Early RM Hubs wanted - Magnesium Anybody?
« on: July 27, 2011, 02:27:25 am »
Hello all, I'm new to the board and being from California I've exhausted all my options here in the USA looking for these parts.  During my quest to obtain the elusive works style hubs I had someone recommend I try my brothers down under since apparently Suzuki sold works bikes to much of the world excluding America.  So I'm building a 1974 TM400 and my objective is to make it as light as I can afford so I'm looking for front and rear early RM hubs (76-78) manufactured from magnesium.  These were available in the USA as "racers spares" but did not come on the bikes, you had to buy and install them.  I have had NO luck in finding these items so if anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it and would forever be in your debt.  Thank you, Mike.

The only mag hub on an RM here was the rear on a RM250A.......and that was only on the early production bikes (where probably leftovers from the 75RH250).....hard to come by as the sprocket bolts would come loose and wreck the hubs.....you blokes didnt get the RH250/RN400 because apparently you guys cant ride. ;D ;D.....welcome aboard.....you guys have all the cheap parts over there so just look out for someone wrecking an RM250A, cheers John.

Hey Davy, believe me I stopped trying to convince people I was fast or could ride well the moment I saw someone who really was fast and that didn't take long.  :D  Now when I race I still feel like I did when I was 18 and sometimes forget what it will feel like at my age to hit the ground.  Afterwards I think of the foolish risks I just took, but man there's nothing I know that will make you feel like a kid for at least a few minutes.  I don't think our American RMs ever came with the mag hubs, but they obviously were available since the parts numbers for them are listed in the parts house's microfiche.  I've come across a few, but most people won't sell them.  I didn't know they had issues with the sprocket bolts.

Mexican - your guess is as good as mine on what they are worth.  Is that to say you have one and you want to know what I'd pay for it?  I hope that's the case.  If so, let me know and I'll make you an offer or you can tell me what you want for it.

At any rate, you guys down under certainly have a robust vintage MX community and an abundance of old bikes and parts.  Makes me kind of jealous.

Thanks for your replys.

The magnesium hubs were available as an option in the parts book, i don't know anyone that ever bought any as they were expensive. I'd say some of the sponsored riders would've used them but they'd be very hard to find now.
