A Canadian Migrant called Maico.
« on: February 19, 2008, 11:00:19 pm »
My 440 Magnum import has finally arrived.
This is my first attempt at reducing a photo through the 'paint program' (thanks for the info oldfart) so here goes...

Having 'Googled' the word 'Maico' at 3 o'clock one morning (as ya do) I found this bike on John Caldwells' 'Canadian Maico' web site.
I 'phoned, the bike was still for sale and the process began.
John's the bloke who built the AW Maico on the front cover of VMX # 31.
Following that cover and the story of the resto he received several offers for the Magnum.
Fortunately for me, he's a man of his word and he held the bike for a very long time while I sorted the import dramas.

Anyhoos, it's finally landed and it looks and smells brand new.

Could just have imagined the grin on your face as you carefully cut away the side of the box with your trusty stanley knife, nice one ;)

Welcome to first grade Wombat. That's a gem of an AW you've got there. Your next problem is building up the nerve to get her dirty.

Thanks for the feedback.

Paul, it came by boat as flying was a tad expensive (not that boating is cheap!).
Rosco, The Customs Inspector knew a bit about VMX and was more keen to open it than I was.
He asked if I wanted to unscrew the cover or just cut it open; I said "I'll cut it" and went to get the stanley knife.
When I returned 60 seconds later he'd torn it open with his hands and said "I couldn't wait"...
But yeah, it was a bit like Christmas opening up the full package.

"Get it dirty" Firko? I'm surprised how many people have asked if I'll ride it or keep it for show!
I think the Works bikes with a bit of history - like we see on Terry Goods web site - are the sort to be kept on show.
Yep, looking forward to gettin' it dirty!

I recently got some bits and pieces off John too and have to say that his service is quicker than the American blokes.
Are you bringing the Canadian beauty to CD5 Wombat?

Yeah Paul, I spoke with him once on the 'phone and a hundred times by e-mail...
He's knows his bikes and comes across as an old fashioned, honest type bloke.
The sort you hope to meet in every Bike Shop.
I'm very grateful he held the bike for so long; it was taking up space and he had several offers while I juggled funds and import permits.

Firko, I intend to bring both the Canadian and the Bendigo beast (Big Ks 326).
Ya can't separate ya kids.

That is a very nice looking bike Wombat. I can imagine how it would be just like Christmas opening up the box to see it for the first time  :).
