BUILDING A PRE 75 DIRT TRACK BIKE NEED SOME ANSWERS
« on: June 30, 2011, 09:09:10 am »
HI
after my trip to the usa i find 1 of the frames i have in the shed is made in 1974 by a company called fast track out of new mexico.they sponsered a rider called bubba shobert in 1974 on a kawa 125 motor in 1 off there frames. mine is exactly the same with a frame no of 068.he later became 3 times no 1 ama champ.
these had disc brake rear brakes. could i use period honda or yamaha road master cyl and calipers?? would these be pre 75 leagle due to them being avaible but on road bikes.
if i have to use drum brakes i have a yamaha rear wheel from a 78 yz400 but the hub yamaha part no is the same as the ones on the yz 250a and 360a which are pre75.yamaha web site and also zedder.also front brakes can they be anything pre 1975 road or mx.ie cb350 twin leader front brake
FRONT TRIPLE CLAMPS????
you can get special clamps made for vft out of alloy would these be legal,or would i have to use betor or ceriarni.i have betor 35mm forks.
just a few questions i would like some answers to before i go ahead and build the bike
yes i have pre75 mx frames but like matcho mick i like things a little different
one more question can the steering angle be changed on a std mx frame and still be period leagle

Jim,
shouldnt be an issue with the frame so long as it fits the suspension requirements, you will be OK using period (pre 75 ) available gear but not pre 78YZ400 hubs if you want to stay pre 75. Suggest that if it is exactly the same you describe it as YZ250 / 360 if you know what Im saying however something is niggling me to say there is some difference? Could be wrong?
As for the clamps - use what you can prove was available, if you have real ones suggest those will be the way to go. Next years rules will be real simple, suggest you take a look at the MA web site and check them out and build the bike to fit.

Welcome back Jim.
If you search through here Peter Rowland changed the steering angle on a YZ465 for flattrack a couple of years ago.
I'm planning to change the angle on a DR500 frame so I can give you a hand if you want.

JIm,
If you want to run a rear disk set up you are going to have to use a period Air heart caliper and Master to be legal pre 75.  I dont believe anything else was used and wouldnt fit properly anyway as you would be trying to fit a front disk from that period to a rear.

You can fit any standard yamaha rear wheel in those frames as i think they are the 19"/17" axles, so you can use any pre 75 YZ, MX or even the DT1 with the cush drive.  Plenty of option there that bolt stright in.

For the front tripples what you need to fit is a TM 125/250 as they will fit straight in, Can use tapered bearings, Have the  the longer Stem you need and also take your 35mm forks as is. (personally  i dont feel the Aftermarket ones are legit in pre 75)

Use the TM front wheel set up as well ( so grab a complete TM front end and it will slot straight in and be Pre 75 legal.) its light and works - you want a small front end, not some mangy road peice of shit.

IF you feeling game run a spooler on the front, then you have a proper US bike if thats what your trying to copy.

here is your rear hub in a pre75 bike
