I'm new here.
« on: June 09, 2011, 05:12:59 pm »
Howdy all,
Just recently joined and thought I better say G'day.
Lived in S.A.forever (56 years) been riding something for 46 of them.
Short history... After the Bantams, James', 350 mac/velo etc., progressed to 360 Yam. RT1, I think, (pre reed valve, ouch), then to TS250/J.
A great indistructable trail bike, got the Motocross bug from good friend Lester Rowley. He was riding TM 400 at the time and had a friend Terry Holt who was looking to sell his V74 Montessa, and away we went... 250 Mont, 250 Mont, VA360 Mont, in 76 bought Lesters 75 model CCM, HL500 Yam copy, by the great Dave Basham, KX250A4...........1986.. KTM 350 Enduro....Back trouble...2000 ish bought a 86 ATK560 to play on....
Get to ride my sons 450CRF... that's it realy. Throw in 3 Roadtrials out fits just for something different and my beautifull Commando, and that's really it. I think.

Welcome to the VMX madhouse - it sounds like you should fit right in ;D.

It will probably be a little quiet over the next few days to a week - most are purposely and blissfully out of reach of all things electronic, and life generally, pigging out on nostalgia, alcohol and old glories and at CD8 ;D.

Hi Ian,

I see buy buy buy but no sold sold sold - do you still have some of them?

Do you know you can get near a grand for a CCM now but if it's clean I'll go to $1200 but only if it was Lester's bike though and cleaned.

Thanks for the welcome in. Hope I can contribute something.
As for quotas, well I think theres still plenty over here yet.
$ 1200.00 for a CCM. Gee I reckon that's about what I got for it in 76/77.
Unfortunately all gone. ATK and Norton now. But certainly up for a bargain Clews.

Yes well These Lester Rowley owned bikes must have bred.
As far as I remember, and I was pretty close, Lester actually raced three.
A 1974, ( still looked like a BSA). A 1975, (Yellow f/g tank). and a 1977. (first leading axel forks, Alloy tank, still 4 sp.)
He was 6' 3" and 16 stone at the time. Lyall Allen had a late 77, 3 speed, Weslake conversion 4 valve.
But Lester did have a new 78 model, as on VMX Mag cover, on it's way, when he broke his leg at Mac Park, road racing.
That bike was sold to a C grader here in S.A. There were 2, 75 models here orriginally, the other one went to another friend
Ross Mc Murtrie. Then 2, Late 75/76 models, still f/g tanks, one went to a lad up in Darwin or Alice Springs and the other one sat here
for a while after the lad that ordered it hurt himself, untill local legend, many times State and Aust champ, and Yamaha dealer,
Dave Basham, bought it, but never raced it.! (That's a great story, I'll tell one day)
I don't believe Lester sold any others. Having said that I guess that makes.. 7, that could be called EX Lester Rowley bikes.
Yes Steve Warns did restore one, and tells me he sold it in a trade for a road bike, Thinks he got about $10,000.00 for it.
Why wasn't I told Steve. And there was a 78/79 Model here at one stage that Jimmy (The Crab) Aird rode in Aust.
I believe this to be the truth, as I remember it. (untampered)
$20,000.00.?? They're not that rare yet.
Are they?

Gee I'v missed all the fun, didn't know Jimmy was here in 06.
Did Clem Nunn bring him out... (W.A.)
The bike I was refereing to was a much later model, and my imfo came from an allmost reliable source.
Those 74s' were good. Someone in England making new (74) frames now. Not Clews.
We'll have to ask someone from the Barrossa what the other add was all about.
Yes I should talk to Don about that bike. If it was mine it would have had Maico forks on it.
If it had YZ forks and front wheel, and set back foot pegs, it was probably Dave Bs'.
I'm glad I joined up now.
