PE flywheel puller
« on: May 19, 2011, 07:09:23 pm »
I only have a puller for the internal type roters on RM's and it doesn't fit up too good. What do I look for to get the flywheel off a PE 250T  ? Cheers.

This has been asked tonnes of times so the info is already on here but here it is again.

You can make your own by making a thick plate about 10-15mm thick and drill 3 holes in about 6-7mm diameter that line up with the 6mm threaded holes in the flywheel. Then drill the center of the plate out and tap it to approx 16mm and then buy a HT bolt to match and then there is your puller. Screw the plate to the flywheel but DONT screw the 3 x 6mm bolts in too far otherwise they will damage the lighting coils. Then screw the center big bolt in and it should pop off. May need a light tap with hammer to give it a little shock. Have a nut screwed on the crank threads a bit to avoid the center bolt damaging the flywheel nut threads.

If that sounds too hard, then you can buy PE flywheel pullers from your local biek shop
Go here to the tools/workshop section
http://www.mcsonline.com.au/
find the part number for the PE puller, then go down to your local bike shop and ask if they can order it for you.

http://www.dssalesusa.net/ - this is the brand that MCS pullers are.

Other option is

http://www.repairmanual.com/online/flywheel-puller-8-hole-disc-w-6mm-puller-bolts-ds-mp13/

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzuki-RM-PE-80-125-250-370-400-Flywheel-Rotor-Puller-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem5ae09aec05QQitemZ390315305989QQptZMotorcyclesQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

and www.denniskirk.com  also has them

and so should the big accessory shops in Australia like

http://www.mcas.com.au/pw/

also http://www.motoduro.co.uk/include/suzuki3.php

They are certianly not hard to find or make.

Also Yamaha TT600 or WR400 (cant remember which one) pullers will work if you drill the 3 holes out slightly bigger so the centers line up with the patter on the PE flywheel.

Thanks LWC. All set now. Something is rattling around inside the flywheel- probably a magnet. I am going to rebuild this one myself for the first time- except for the crank bearings being farmed out.

Lwc, has anyone sourced a supplier for new magnets yet for these pesky flywheels.

No and its not as simple as that. The answer i got from the expert in this area was to get donor magnets from another flywheel. They are not exactly a normal magent either as i discoverd a while back. At least one is kinda strange as it has some sort of dead magnetic spot in the middle of it to act as the trigger. There is a heap of info on the PE forum on it and magnetic patterns formed with metal filings etc. When you position a compass near the magnets you will see what i mean.

However it is possible remagnetise them. Ive had some 125 Villiers flywheel magnets done by a guy who made up his own remagnetiser. There are places that professionally do it but it costs more than a brand new flywheel from suzuki.

If you search around the net on 'stationary engine/tractor engine' forums you will find info on there as those are the guys remagnetising their flywheels on their old engines they do up and thats what the guy who did the Villiers one for me is into. Contact machinery preservation societies near your area as theres bound to be someone in there that knows about it.

At this stage the easiest option is to just pop a PE175, pre 80 PE250 or a RS175/250 system on or just order a new one from suzuki.

Just to add my 2cents worth on the f/wheel puller i use a little ball bearing at the end of the centre bolt if you havent tapered the bolt.
It keeps the thread on the c/shaft nice  ;D

I have a puller that I made up for PE's, If you're stuck you are welcome to use it if you are OK to pay for postage to and from Perth (that's in Western Australia)
