honda verse yamaha big bores
« on: February 14, 2008, 07:32:09 am »
I ve asked this question on the Yamaha page so lets start flinging some s##T
seems to be a lot of Honda big bore owners out there so whats better 480/500 Honda's or the Yamaha 465/490 not just who beat who in the last few rounds(which is still interesting), but which is more reliable and which has better technology
Magoo, Brad bet you got some good info

Simon you can guess our views already (despite me being a 'halfling'....cr250...) - but we can rustle up some facts to support the bleeding obvious.

1. 465 had the motor, and suspension not bad for '80/'81, but didn't stop
2. 490 lost the good motor and some of the handling, and also didn't stop
3. honda big bores had rising rate from first one, added front disc soon after, and then cartridge forks, which meant they handled and stopped
4. honda added water cooling to their big bores - yama did not.
5. colour - red looks the best - stuff the rest!!

Done deal.

You like blondes, I like red heads, I like Holdens, you like Fords, I like Rugby Union, you like Soccer and you like Hondas, I like Maicos and Yamahas. So what? They're all good. In the end the only real difference between the bikes is the bloke holding on to the bars.
The problem with threads like this is that our personal taste always over rides any objective input. In the end nothing is gained other than we've taken the chance to wave our Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki/Maico/Suzuki/Husky/Whatever flag again.

........yes, I woke up grumpy this morning >:(

Comes down to personal choice. I dont hate Yamaha and once owned a YZ250 and a YZ465. I just preferr Honda. Im quite found of Suzuki too with few RMs allocated floor space my shed.
Guess proof of my Honda love affair is in fact im restoring one of the most loathed Honda models ever made. The CR450, one of the worst top 10 MX bikes ever built. Ya gotta love your breed to take that on.  ;D

So you woke up Grumpy this morning Firko, does that make you Snow White?
Over the last couple of years I've raced a YZ465 (dunno what model but it was white) a CR450RB, CR480RC, CR480RD and a CR500RE. To put them in order of preference I'd rank the RD & RC first and second, the 465 third, the 450 4th and the 500RE last. Unless you're a fit B grader forget the 500, it's too much.

I have to admit the 465 is a great bike but the best Pre '85 bike of them all is the 1983 480. Fast, handles, stops and is easy to ride.

Go along with that one Magoo as I would say I am 3 seconds a lap faster around Connondale on my RE 250 that my RE 500 then again I am ony 5 foot nothing tall and the 500 is a big bike to ride as you make it look like an 80!!

a bit off topic maye, but i love my 1985 CR500RF, but i can circulate a lot faster on my CR250 for sure. i just get a bigger buzz from the 500 and that's what i like these days, i am not looking for results these days i ride for the sheer fun of it.

Firko is right as i am biased, mainly because its all i know. I raced Hondas back when, and i have Hondas of that era now. Never riden a yz or any other for that matter(exept the Maygo). Magoo is right about the 480 rd. Pick of the reds. Easy to ride and handles well, plus the good old Honda brakes. I only ever raced one big bore, the 85 500. I liked it more than any other.

sounds like i am on a winner, still like the look of the rb's even if they were not the best.

I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.
