17mm Hubs

Looking to put a braked rear whel in a godden frame but running into trouble. Most hubs that fit nicely use either 14 or 15mm axles, unfortunately swingarm slots measure just over 17mm as it would have probably been 5/8? when originally built. Looking for something pre 78. Any ideas? Present hub I'm trying I think is from a 77/78 KTM and runs a 15x35x11 bearing one side that I can get a 17x35x11 for, but other side is 15 x 42 x11 and only bearing I can find is 17 x 40 x 11 so I hit a brick wall. Add to the woes re difficulty getting a 17m bolt around 225mm long. Thinking about trying to get some 15mm ID and 17mm OD shims made but really don't like that option. Swingarm is nickeled so not much room to move there also.74 maico hub looks close to size but looks but ugly on this bike and back in the day hey really didn't work all that well. Swingarm ID is 170mm so I need to be wary on width. Wondering if a cz or husky hub may fit. REH would probably work but them seem scarce on evil-bay.Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Rosco, if it is just over 17mm but imperial? it would have been an 11/16" axle. Maicos run 17mm axles.

I will see if I can find my bearing Catalog for your KTM hub options.

i bought a rickman rear wheel  17 axle in the usa reh cost me 56.00 plus shipping.should be here at the end of feb deals can be made on ebay.
if you get 1 i can get it to sydney faily cheap about 45.00 aus total then need to get to you.

Rosco, If you really want to stick with the KTM hub/wheel? they make 20 x 42 x 12 bearing. You could run one of these steel flanged hat sleeves in it, to bring the ID back to a 17mm shaft size.


A very common and acceptable engineering practice. I am unfamiliar with KTM hubs. You would have to accommodate for the extra width of the flange on the hat sleeve and the extra 1mm on bearing width. A very easy job for a center lathe.

i have done that very thing modifying yamaha yz400 rear wheel into usa staracer frame i think it was 20mm the swing arm.i also ran my wheel adjuster bolts from them as well.my brothers hagon tt500 has yz125 rear wheel in it with the same thing.

As Jim said , thats how I got round the problem with my Hagon TT , fitted a DT 175 wheel spoked into 19 inch rim and had stepped spacers to fit the axle diameter and swing arm slots machined up, been there since '95 no probs.

Rosco, most early Yamaha Hubs are 17mm axles ! TT, XT , early YZ, MX and DT

Mick....Where did you get these hat sleeves or did you make them. I've got a similar problem as Rossco with my Rickman rear hubs 15mm axle and 17mm slots in the frame.
