Freaky,

I have a PVL (rotor type) in place of the stock ignition (flywheel type) on my CR480 and it is a pain to get started (more so than with the stock ignition).  Did you start it much with the stock ignition?

never had one. al my bikes run PVl all start first itme.  i think im on too small a winding thow it has a NR1058 in it which is supposed to be for 250cc and unders, and well this is a 360.  I have the cloth tape 5000 winding on the YZ360 and  its a first kicker and hauls.  so i suspect i need to put the bigger cloth tape unit on or figure out how to get more swing in the kick ( maybe a change kickstarters ) as they only seem to have a small rotation with a distint lack of speed.....

Mine was a class one bastard , It hated me Im 86kg and I could stand on the kick starter not even a flicker of spark . DT400 cdi replaced the points and it now runs and even kick starts.  Iain

I've had PVL on my DT1 250 and now have it on my 360 but have yet to run it. I wasn't aware that there were different windings for the 250 and 360 so I must look into that. I've run PVL on my Maicos for years with no problems, even swapping it from 250-350-400 with no noticable difference.

I too have had good success with DT400 ignitions, especially on 360's. The heavy outside flywheel mimics the flywheel weight of the original points ignition but with the bonus of easy start CDI. I've also used MX250 CDI and in the early days of the DT1 from Hell, a Motoplat CDI that'd been adapted to fit the Yamaha by some unknown punter that I found at a swapmeet. It ran really well until it suddenly died in typical Motoplat fashion. They're all a vast improvement on the stock Yamaha points system.

Yep even the PVL book says open class bikes need the cloth winding 5000 ( or they will be too hard to start).  All my 250 and 125 bikes run NR1058 or NR1061  4000 winding PVL's and even as late as last night i have swapped in an out coil, stator and box with the same result on the RT1 just incase it was a dry joint or somethign odd in the unit.

Result i found was you cant seem to get enough momentum in the flywheel kick to keep enough spark up to the RT1, for a easy kickstart. even with fine point egv plugs ( its almost like you get a spark every second rotation) and you cant get the flick through for an fast enough enertia rotation after the kick, it slows under load and not release a spark after the first  1-2 rotations

My YZ360 has the 5000 winding and its a first kick and runs like a cut snake.  So they seem to be correct in there assumptions dammit

if i cant get a 5000 down the track ill just put the normal 360mx CDI unit complete on they worked just fine on the 360MXA as a first kick.  looked at doing it last night but bit too close to do this near to Friday nats......  ill just do some push startin  ;)
