Theft of Classic Bikes - Vincent, Velo, Norton etc (
« on: November 03, 2010, 09:08:21 pm »
This has been passed on from the Classic Italian Motorcycle Assoc.

I had a phone call from Brian Greenfield the other day to inform me of some sad news, which Brian wanted me to pass on to other riders.
An old time acquaintance and Vincent enthusiast who is a member of various clubs about Sydney - Paul Leeder, has been diagnosed with cancer.
He's had a rough trot of late with his mother dying 3 months ago, and Paul has been hospitalised with his cancer and chemo treatment etc.
Whilst he was in hospital and the house was empty, someone has taken all of his bikes, motors and assorted parts except a 1937 Sunbeam which was left behind
(which we find is quite odd). It was a reasonably large collection and you would think that someone must have seen it being moved out?

Please keep an eye out and all ears open if you see any movement of bikes on ebay etc.  The stolen bikes consist of :

  • Vincent Black Shadow   ex- Bill Forbes   Eng no. F10AB/1B/4162   Frame no. 6062. The Vincent cases have a camplate spindle boss welded on top of the gearbox.
  • 1928 Scott
  • 1936 Scott
  • 1930 Norton model 19 588cc
  • Ducati Cucciola bicycle engine 49cc
  • Levis 2 stroke motor
  • Velo MSS gearbox
  • 1928 Douglas horizontally opposed engine
  • Neracar engines x 3
  • Harley model J engine  29/35   V twin 750cc  -   this belongs to Brian
  • Box of carbies and assorted parts

from Jeff Wenden, please feel free to pass this on to your own contacts.

This more than likely wouldn't be random theft.  Someones had their eye on it and waited for the right time to pounce.  So, someone that knows him or of him and has an interest or connections who are interested in cheap classic bikes.

This theft brings back sad memories of the theft of Allen Burt's classic race bikes a few years ago. Allen was also in hospital when the 'scumbab brothers' who happened to be fellow classic racers swooped and cleaned him out. They caught the slime that did it but they never recovered the bikes which included Allen's priceless G45 GP Matchless, one of only 12 made. The theft sucked all of Allen's will to live and he died a very sad man.

This sounds like a similar 'inside knowledge' job although taking all of the odd engines and parts and leaving a classic and very desirable Sunbeam is indeed very odd. Perhaps they were disturbed before they got to the Sunbeam, who knows? These thieves are scum, not only for taking a persons possessions but for taking away the heart and soul of these old fellas very reason for living. Anyone who knows an old classic bike guy will know just how much those bikes mean to their lives.

I hope this has a happier ending than poor Allen Burt's theft.

Thats bad news, hope "Karma" works in this case.
As much as I hate the idea of security cameras around a house, I've been considering installing a system for a while, after this news I just have to do it now.

Sounds like an inside job, bastards, l feel so sorry for him, my father (RIP) He had a large collection of scotts many years ago, 6 years after he died my mother sold them at an auction at the Brighton town hall with all the other bikes that dad had, but we still have a 2 speed scott and a 350 Air cooled Scott, they are lovely bikes, l hope the police will find them. and l hope he get well.

Sounds like an inside job, bastards,

An inside job would be even more despicable, the dirtbags you can understand, if it was fellow classic 'enthusiasts' ripping off the guy with inside knowledge, anything I can think of is too good for them. Still some of our fellow 'enthusiasts' would steal the coins off a dead mans eyes. >:(

BIKIE'S.
I definitely don't include the Bikie Gangs as enthusists but their tentacles extend further than you would believe. Given any oportunity they will pounce.
After my mother passed away Dad went off the rails and was hitting the turps a fair bit at the Wallacia hotel, he had a great collection of early Dirt Trackers & such that he was understandably proud of.
Loose lips sink ships, he was on his own on a property at Greendale and the shed was a fair distance from the house, one night all our good stuff was thieved.
I always suspected that a local well known Gang was responsible, especially as I saw my Speedway bike in the back of an old Valiant ute in an Industrial complex at Hoxton Park, along with about 20 bikers, but I had the sense not to jump out on my own as I probably wouldn't be here today.
The Cops were no help at the time.
At one point I was friendly with a guy who is a lifelong friend of this gangs current leader and when I told him the story he said that if I knew him at the time, all our bikes would've been returned without question, apparently they have a "CODE".
ARSEHOLES.

Yeah the code is 'fork you Im alright' .... during my Harley days in Aussie I took a few simple precautions, didn't leave the garage door up a nano second longer than it took to go inside, varied my route home so I wasn't caught by habit, reinforced the doors with steel sheet, ran a long bolt through both my roller doors to bolt them closed, had drop bolt in front door that couldn't be seen, never left my bike beyond line of sight, monitored alarm .... after that never had a problem

It is a sad fact of life that 9 times out of ten, the arseholes who steal others property are somehow acquanted, usually a friend of a friend. I hope this story ends well but if bikies have got anything to do with it the bikes are probably in pieces in a container on there way to some foreign land. Usually NZ, Lebanon or the good ol USA. With that haul of classic machinery it would be hard to imagine that they would ever surface in Australia, especially the Black Shadow. In saying that, lets hope that whoever the pricks are, they are stupid enough to try and pass them as their own at a show or the like.

I had my very first bike stolen, The first 5 speed XR75 to be sold in Australia according to the then Coogee Honda. And yep, it was a friend of a so called friend. They broke into the house to steal it, along with the colour tele! I got the XR back thanks to the Randwick coppers but it was trashed beyond repair for a 12 y/o kid. The next bike pinched was my near new CR125RZ, and again it was someone I knew. I found out where it was as it wasn't everyday I got to see a gleeming red elsinore tearing around the streets of Randwick. It got sold for half an ounce of pot.....I bought it back for 150 bucks, actually, my grandfather bought it back for me, god bless him. I kept it at my cousins place after that.

These days, I keep what I have to myself and tell no one what I have in my shed. Only a select few know where I live and what I have and I fully intend on keeping it that way. My grandfathers wise words of "don't tell your left hand what your right hand is doing" finally sank in.

While we are on the subject, Shannons due very reasonable insurance for classic bikes. It won't help get the bike(s) back but at least there will be some spondoolies to fund something else.

Best of luck to Paul and his family, not only for the return of his bikes, but for his health too.
Arrogance.....A way of life for the those that having nothing further to learn.

Very sorry to hear this. The worlld is full of A#$eholes. Here's my story

Always brings back memories. In 78 I had my RM125a pinched The bike Cost $425 then ,that was alot of money for a first year apprentice on $65 a week.
The boys are right it was some one I knew casually and about one week earlier had gone riding with. I found out who about 3 years later, he was in prison at the time (20 yrs old, you get the idea of his personal morals). I never got to speak to him as he died shortly after his release from a drug OD. Spose Karma can be a bit harsh some times.

Never got  my bike back but atleast I know what happenned. Getting your bike stolen or anything else teaches you to be a very honest person because you really do understand the pain.

30 yrs later I have a original one owner low use RM125 a , I keep it in my bedroom. Yes a very understanding wife.

I hope his most important possession, his health gets better.
