Removing the fly wheel from a PE 175T
« on: January 19, 2011, 02:16:23 pm »
I am just wondering how I losen the nut on the fly wheel so I can remove it?
I have used a air rachet but still can't crack it.
Is there some way of locking the fly wheel in place to help?

Cheers
Mark

Even if you get the nut undone, you will need a puller. If you try and take it off with no puller you will damage the magnets and the flywheel will basically been rubbish. plenty of guys have done that and PE flywheels are not easy to come by.

Try getting someone to sit on the bike with the bike in gear and apply both brakes. Rather than a rattle gun, try using a socket on a breaker bar with long extension.

The other way is to remove the piston and put a rod through the conrod and have it suppored on blocks on the cases. That way theres no way it can turn.

Here is what the puller looks like

These are sold in Australia so you dont have to buy from overseas.

Normaly there is a specail tool that looks something like a oil filter tool. that fits around the flywheel.
You maybe able to hire one from the local bike shop.
Getting this wrong can be expensive and hard to fix ( PVL ingition are $500 ) Might be best to ask local bike shop if that can do it. Get everything ready and they can probably do it without unloading the bike.
Offer cash and hope they just charge you a quick $20.00 for 5 min work.

Also when screwing the 3 puller bolts in, dont screw them in too far. Ive got a PE400 stator here that someone destroyed when trying to remove the flywheel by screwing the 3 6mm bolts in too far and basically ripped up the coils and made a big mess.

Thanks for all the answers, I remember now from doing an old CR I had that you need two people or the right tools.

I do know I will need a puller, but I may just take it to the shop and get them to do it, just to be on the safe side.

Regards

Yes, two simple tools are required. One to hold it when you undo the nut, the other to pull it off.
You can buy or fabricate these yourself. Easy.
