pe rear shocks
« on: December 29, 2010, 09:15:13 am »
Hi all, hope santa was good! I finally got to take the old pe250c for a run, very happy! Its a bit rich and the rear shocks are crook, but apart from that it ran like a champion. The RM250 top end seems to work well although lacking a little grunt at low rpm, which is to be expected. But up in the revs on the pipe the front end gets very light! This was with the reed valve installed, didnt get time to lift the barrel and remove it to try. Dont really want to but i need to know why it was left out the first time....
Where can i get some new rear shocks, or i have the rm remote-reservoir shocks, can they be overhauled? I dont need top-shelf items, just something to dampen a bit. I thought about shocks off a modern quad or something like that? Or how about speedway formula500 type shocks? ???
Cheers, Shane

Cheapest shocks on the market that I've seen are probably Hagon. They are okay on short travel bikes, but I would be wary of a set for longer travel. I would send the originals off to be rebuilt. There is a place in Brisbane that does it. Associated with Rad hard chromers.

Quad shocks wont fit/work right and are not a good option unless you have them modified (too much $ for most people) or are good at DIY and know what your doing in regards to making them fit/work right. Ive done it my self and you can save money but if you have no idea what your doing then i would steer clear of that option. I would go with getting the RM shocks rebuilt and made into rebuildables and have a few improvements done to them at the same time. They will be a lot better than any non rebuildable cheapies that wont last. Keep in mind that most RM shocks are not the ideal dimensions for PE's. They usally are a bit too long overall and have  abit too much shaft travel etc, so try them out first to see stuff clears and the wheel doesnt bottom out on the airbox or rear fender before paying to get them rebuilt. You can usaully pick up good second hand Ohlins around the place that wont take much to set up right, just as long as you start off with a set that is ablout right dimensionally and maybe only needs a different set of bottom eyes. Other option is to just pay $800-$1200 and get a good brand new set.

Noisy Toy. Rad motorcycle shock repairs is different from Rad Hard Chrome.  Contact details for Rodney at Rad Shocky's are 07 3892 6493 or 0417 009 946. Located at Unit 103/C 49 Station Rd, Yeerongpilly. Just off Ipswich Rd. I use them for old Ohlins and they know what they are doing - well it seems so to me anyway! Good luck.
