Shine some light !!
« on: November 10, 2010, 12:36:55 pm »
Yep I scored and I'm a hoarder.  :P
Planned pick up next week- any info/pics or link would be great.
I have checked out the Sammy Millers website and am still amazed that older bike parts are still manifactured and readlly available in all racing disciplines.  8)
cheers and thanks

I pulled the Bultaco 250 Sherpa out from around the back. It has been out in the weather for a while as I did not have a shed with sufficient room to put it inside. Considering that it is in reasonable nick. It is about a 1969 or 1970 model I think. It has an original Sammy Miller stamped part on it. Whoo hoo!
Geoff Young won the State Trials championship on it - I am not sure which year. He won a fair few. He most probably took it to the Australian Championships as well. He also rode the Scottish Six Days-the unofficial world championship of the time. I am not sure if he took his bike or borrowed one in the UK. I used to work with Geoff whose father had a motorcycle shop in North Perth called Bill Young Motorcycles.

Great find, esp w the history.

Heaps of parts still readily available for Bultacos/Sherpas, both in Oz & UK.
If its 69-70 its probably an M49 model

How about some pics as is?

Your new toy is clearly an early series M49 and was probably made in 1968 or 1969. Later in the M49 series the frame is different under the motor and the top shockie mounts were moved down a bit, and the fibreglass sidecover sections had scallops to suit the shock mounts.
The top shock mounts where the shocks are attached on yours are not standard.
Mine looks the same as yours and is numbered 4900100. I suspect the SM stamping on the top triple is because the standard handlebar clamp design (u-bolts) triple clamp was replaced with the more sensible Sammy Miller (SM) aftermarket type of top triple clamp which later on became standard on Sherpa Ts.
Yes the rims are shouldered Akronts (very cool)
Rare to see one with the original alloy mudguards and alloy chain guard still intact

Geoff Young hey? I think your bike might be featured on that famous ABC TV footage of the 1970 Aussie trials titles held at Byford in WA. I will have a look when the kids are in bed.

Nice find Alison. My best mate had this very same model back in the glory days and it never ever let him down, except for a couple of ignition (Femsatronic??) failures. After its trials days were over and he'd purchased a newish Montesa Cota, the Sherpa T recieved a tricked up Metralla 250 road racer engine and it did a couple of seasons of dirt track. The geometry on these early Spanish trials bikes works really well on dirt track (as Matcho Mick can vouch with his OSSA MAR dirt track weapon). After a couple of years of dirt track the trials engine went back in and he still owns it in good unrestored condition.
That's going to be a cool project but tell me it ain't true that you're putting a chair on the thing. ::)

Great find ! very original (other than the yammie hammerheads!) theres something spekky about the older 49 and 91 sherpas, easy to start and very reliable when setup properly, there a great thing to just jump on and go for a plonk around the paddock ;)cheers

In that ABC TV footage from 1970 at Byford, both Geoff Young and his Dad Bill Young are riding M49s of the same early type as yours.

Here are some links to info about M49s. One is Dave Friesen's blog about his, my and others M49s. The other one is a forum string that contains a link to a film made in 1969 in France showing M49s being used as intended.

While you are at the trials.com.au twinshock trials forum have a look at postings by Brownie of Armidale (NSW) who recently started riding his M49 again after a 30 year break from trials. He has posted some good photos this year.

Thanks David for all the info/links,28 pages of info  8)  ya bloods worth bottlin-very nice bike above in smik condition.
Thanks for the information, shame everything is locked up on the T49 ,but in saying that all is original and the Akront label is still on the rim.  ;D  I dont think it was riden very hard and was treated with respect on the trails  :)
Took it off the trailer and had a good look,Its a very low bike even with flat tyres  ;D will be great to plod around on.
Dont suppose you can have those solid foot pegs anymore  :-\
Also looking at the pre75 trials there is a varst difference in the modern and yet my new find is light.
Have sprayed with special CRC 2-26 :P  so hope it comes alive when I return to the shed next  ;)  :o  ;D
No chair Filko all things in life must be original  ;D
cheers all Alison
There should be more hand writing in owners manuals for histroy sake.!
