Dirt Track tyre question
« on: November 18, 2010, 09:21:13 pm »
OK, next year I'm going dirt tracking. I'm OK for tyres for the 75 RM125, but don't know about the 2005 YZ125. It has a 19" rear wheel which I am not about to change. From what I can see the only option is a Mitas speedway tyre. There are two types - SW07 and SW09. The 07 is s standard speedway tyre, while the 09 is apparently for 'classic' speedway. I prefer the look of the 09 for the YZ125. Anyone out there got a clue about this?

it maybe the cuts across the block of the tread.some have 3 or 5 cuts thru the tread block. chivo`s at granville could help as he has links to speedway.he may have a larger tyre choice or advice.

Graeme I think another option in the Speedway rear maybe Kenda although I dont think anyone is using those on Speedway. As far as I know SW-09 is not avail in Australia. Which leaves us to SW-05 and SW-07. SW-05 has seven cuts across centre block and SW-07 has three. There are a couple of other minor difference's in construction but from a Speedway riders point of view that is the main difference.

At ninety nine percent of Speedway Tracks in Aus ninety nine percent of solo riders will use SW-07. They are designed to work best when you can spin them up. Solo riders I have spoken to like them over and above SW-05 for that reason. The Speedway sidecar boys on the other hand seem to like and use the SW-05 because it seems to bite more. Think it has something to do with the seven cuts v three cuts in the centre block.

Mitas SW-07 is the control tyre sanctioned by the FIM for use in all SWGP events.

I would disagree with the guy that posted that said that they dont work on deco. I am presuming he means decomposed granite. The info I have is they work very well on that surface. That is not to say that someone may not be happy with them on that surface.

Like Graeme I would love to hear more on this topic.

Thanks for all that. I don't know what to think now! The Mitas tyres must work at some level if all the speedway guys use them, and aren't speedway tracks often deco? I've been looking at photos of MX bikes racing DT and they do all seem to run the 18s with Michelins. You'd think if the Mitas' worked there'd be a few on them. Should have gone out to the local club's last round a week or two back and checked it out, huh?

What's with the Kenda, do they make a 19?

Speedway tyres dont work so good on modern MX bikes, unless you riding it as a slider and upright and i have seen very few people do it and go fast, only tyre that seems to work on a heavy MX bike is the Michilen X10 and the new dunlop, everything else seems to go pear shaped on the wall.  You watch a trials tyre on a  MX bike and its almost rolling off the rim, the speedway tyre doesnt work the same way in the wall.  And they dont have the tread,  there control tyre for a reason.
IF you just going for a spin on DT then i can send you some used 19' speedways cheap, but your going to wan to keep you eye out for a cheap 18' rim if your serious and then go down that path at a later date if you like DT.

Looks like I'll have to go to an 18" rim. I like dirt track, used to do it a lot. I'm over motocross - I haven't the fitness to last more than about 2 laps and I cannot make myself do jumps. So, to enjoy the sense of competition I am just going to do some local track, and maybe the occasional vintage dirt track if I can find some. I'm not 'serious', but by the same token I don't wanna be skating around like you woud be on a Cheng Shin or similar.
