Best to use a readily available vinyl paint and an airbrush, an aerosol can is hard to control. It's a bit tricky until you have done a few, so have a practise if you can.
Cheers,
K

CG,
You can get specific vinyl paint that I have used with good results.
Secret's are completly clean seat, lots of light coats, and warm your can in water first.
Colours are limited though.

What is best to use for a stencil?
I imagine a stencil that sticks to the seat material would be best?

Signwriters have a special stencil vinyl. It's alot easier to apply than standard vinyl.
I take the old seat cover to them, they scan it and computer cuts exact replica.

I have stencilled quite a few seats. I do have a vinyl cutter and sign software though which makes things much easier.
For stencils,I have found that the better 7yr vinyls are softer and stick to the textures that some covers have better than others.
As far as Paint goes, I use thinned down Screenprinting ink, the type used for stickers and the soft Vinyl wheel covers
you see on 4wd's etc. I spray with an airbrush or small touch-up gun. A couple of light coats to reduce the chance of the ink
bleeding under the stencil.
CG, message me if you need a hand.

The self adhesive vinyls that I make the stencils from are often rated as having a 3 year or 7 year outdoor life.
I found that the 7yr stuff is thinner/softer and the paint doesnt bleed under it as easy  :)
