78 to 81 Monocross

Ok Yama-hoppers... working on a super duper project and need some info.

Rear shock from 78 to 81 models.

Are they all the same?
Is 78-79 same and 80-81 same?
Are all their lengths the same?
Do they all take the same LENGTH spring?
Is that spring’s ID and OD same accross the years?

Top secret stuff needing some accuracy... I have used an OEM part finder to get some basics, but need a few owners to help me out.

The '78/'79 shocks are similar but the '79 shock is 50mm shorter. The '80/ '81 shocks are pretty much the same but totally different to '78/'79. Nothing is interchangable from '78/79 to '80/81

No, and pretty-much.

Pretty much - they do all run a 46mm piston/50mm body OD, but there are the expected differences in OD due to various spring rates, and differences in ID due to some of them being progressive rate springs.

78 have steel body, 79 went to alloy & shorter body.
80/81 were "USD" (shock body at the front of the bike, shaft at the back) with a remote gas cannister and shorter again.
81 has ribbed adjuster knob rather than the 80's smooth one. The earlier ones had an alloy adjuster that you're supposed to use a screw driver or something to operater through a hole in the frame.
