Unlike the ISDTs, MX riders didn't go to the MXDN until someone paid for them to go.  Not sure when that was.

Our first showing was the Trophy des Nations in 1984 or 85.
I'm hazy on the details, but they used to run seperate events for each capacity class. The TdN was for 250s.

MX  de Nations during the '70 and early '80s was run as a three person national team. A 125 rider, 250 rider & 500 rider. Three 40min motos ran. Moto 1 - 125 & 250, Moto 2 - 250 & 500, Moto 3 - 125 & 500. I can not remember which order the races where held. The scoring was 1 for 1st, 2 for 2nd etc. The team with the lowest score won. Sometime during that period the scoring rule changes so the team could drop its worst score. Thats my memory of it anyway. Belgium was the force in MX de Nations at the time. Well the seventies anyway.

Thats my recollection and am happy to be corrected.

From Wikipedia:

Quote
The event as it stands today is an amalgamation of three separate events, the original Motocross des Nations, raced with 500cc motorcycles, the Trophée des Nations, raced with 250cc motorcycles, and the Coupe des Nations, for 125cc motorcycles. Before 1984, the three events were held in different locations on different weekends, whereafter they were combined into a single event with one rider per class.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motocross_des_Nations

I was reading the c1984 ADB article only a few weeks ago - may have been the 1983 event if the Wiki article is right. I'm pretty sure they were on 1984 model bikes, FWIW.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Up until the mid 80's there were 2 events.. Trophee des Nations for 250cc and 1 week later the Motocross des Nations for 500cc. The team consisted of 4 riders on 250's at the Trophee then the same 4 riders on 500's the following week at the Motocross des Nations.
I think Australia started sending a team consistently from the mid 80's, some of the guys i remember going in that time were Leisk, Dack, Bell and Armstrong. From memory our best finish was a 4th which is yet to be bettered.

Does anyone remember the coupe des nations for 125cc bikes , it ran for a short time in the early 80s 1981 to 1984 ?

I remember the italians winng it a couple of times with Michelle Rinaldi and Cordio maddi riding a Cagiva  :)

The Poms are 2nd on the all time MXDN win tally behind the Seppos  :)

the US won again in 92 with their "B" team of Liles,LaRocco and Emig. The top riders at the time weren't interested- McGrath,Stanton etc.Even longtime team manager Roger D gave it a miss.

The 2 events a week apart format continued to 84 .In 85 at Gaildorf in Germany it became one event with one  rider  in each class 125,250,500 all run together for 3  motos .In 86 they changed to the current format of 3 motos with 2 class's per moto.
