spoked wheel tidy up
« on: September 19, 2010, 10:03:57 pm »

I would like to give the wheels on the Mony a clean up but would prefer not to de-spoke and polish. Any ideas? I did by some Septone aluminimun acid based cleaner but not sure if this is the way to go. Any thougths?

The Septone cleaner will clean the rims if they are bare alloy. If they are annodized the cleaner wont do anything. To find out if its annodized or bare, use the continuity buzzer tester on your multimeter. Buzzes - then its bare, no buz then its annodized. Now the only thing is that the Septone stuff will make the spokes and nipples go black and horible and strip the plating (zinc) off pretty quickly so using this stuff is not a good idea on an assembled wheel. Also the Septone cleaner will run down between rim hole and spoke and get on the inside of the rim where it will continue to etch away at the rim under and around the nipple as well as corroding the nipples even if you try and wash it all off. So honestly the best and only way to properly do it is to de-lace the whole wheel so you have got the bare rim. I have tryed to do assembled engines with it and mask off some bolts etc but it never really works, you have to swap the bolts out for old ones you dont mind if the cleaner strips the/tarnishes the plating finish.

Take photos, make drawings, count the number of crosses, keep inner and outer spokes from each side of wheel in separate groups. But first off measure offset across brake drum down to rim edge.

Got pissed off with all my husky rims being cracked sooo I,ve just fitted a yammy one.
Brute force and a hand drill work but I,me NEVER going to do that again.
Came up ok and looks real, just different colour.
Advice NEVER try to fit a drum brake rim to a disk brake hub.  ???
