Exhaust Gasket for 54M

I'm mucking with a 54M trying to get it running. The exhaust is loose. I need the cooper ring gasket (I'm guessing here - the bike didn't have a gasket and I've never worked on one before ) I take it to be part as above 1350.041.

Anyone know where I can get one? In Oz? O/S? Is there a dodge to make one (even temporary). Maybe a lead solder wire held by exhaust silicon?

I've seen all sorts of gasket types used, from cut down copper/asbestos to glass wool.  So long as the thread is still good, and you tie-wire the nut, there are lots of make-do options, if only to get you by until Jared sends you the right one.  I haven't had a look lately, but I might have a used one floating around for a 54m in my pile of Montesa bits.  I'll have a look tomorrow.

they have an asortment of copper and non asbestos fibre rings

I went to the exhaust shop and got a crush washer of the right size. Doing it up it won't 'bottom out' and hold the exhaust tight. I'm trying to work out why. Everything seems okay; in straight, first part of the thread goes in easy, nut thread looks good, about half way it starts tightening. I would guess the collar needs to go in about 2-4mm further before it 'bottoms out', tightens and hold the exhaust. Should I force it or does the inlet thread get clogged with two stroke gunk (I can't see in there - engine is in the frame). Or is this 'normal and to be expected?

What do you guys use to turn the exhaust nut? I haven't got a C spanner large enough. I was think of fabricating one or acquiring one. I'm using Stilsons and a hammer and punch (as someone before me has ).

(A exhaust nut with a fine thread is a shit of an arrangement in this application - especially on a 2t. )

Maybe it's just not thick enough? I don't know how thick the original is though.
Or maybe get in there with a small wire brush and some contact cleaner to try and clean the thread up?

Good idea about the exhaust C-spanner, I should get one too as my collar looks like it's never been off.
Anyone know where to buy one?

I haven't seen the original so I can only guesstimate and use the parts drawing as a guide but the crush washer looks right and is about 5mm thick. If I got it down tight and the pipe was still loose I would suss the thickness of the crush washer.

Unfortunnately the Stilsons can easily distort the exhaust nut out of round and as it screws in it binds on the thread. It does not take much to do the damage from memory. One of the few special tool I bought in the '70s for the Monties was a 'C' spanner of the 54M exhaust as it was really the only way to do it up without damage.

The exhaust nut usually only distorts in the second half of its length resulting in what you describe.

I don't think distortion is the prob. The ex nut is pretty substantial and I'm using adjustable stilsons carefully.

I'll look for the C spanner or make modify one regardless but I think there's another prob.

Mine would have about 5mm of thread still showing - so it is tighening well before it should. Probably 2t gunk in the thread or a damaged thread (why do I muck with this old shit) - I'll have to make more of an effort to see in.
