Molasses Question

  Hey guys, I have a pair of huskies that have the original wheels and lighty rusted spokes,which are our riders and i dont want to go to the expense of have them respoked or rebuilt (dont want to sell my last kidney just yet  ) just wondering if anybody has put whole wheels in the molasses tub and if so what would be the outcome on 1-the hub ,2-the rim and 3 the spokes ? it wouldnt bother me if i lost both the anodising on rim and the paint on the hub as long as it doesnt eat anything away before the rust on the spokes gets cleaned up- YAY or NAY? any input /advice would be greatly apreciated, Cheers

i doubt it'd affect the alloys at all but cleaning that molasses crap off will be the fun part.

Haven't tried it, but I've read it might eat your alloy wheels away.
Check things out carefully.

if there only lighty rust why not just get a can of Rp7 and a wire or sctch bright cloth fromt he kichen cupboard. do the same thing.

Or carefully mask everything off and give the spokes a coat of silver spray paint.

I do it all the time. I put a pair of 81 Husky wheels in and they came out a treat and were bolted pretty much staight into a bike.. If there's any white scale on the alloy the paint on the hubs will lift, but it won't affect the anodising. The longer you can leave them in the better, but at least a week, two if you can wait that long. I have a green wheelie bin full and put anything that can fit in it, holds 6 mx wheels. Do it, you'll be wrapt with the results.

    That sounds ace BigK, what ratio do you recommend ? what happened to the paint on your hubs, did it only lift where there was corrosion? the paint on mine is solid no flakey corrosion what can i expect to happen to it ?i suppose if the paint comes off patchy i could strip or beadblast hubs? also what technique/product did you use to cleanup ? cheers

now given that Molasses is only really unrefined sugar, what about Coke, we have all heard those stories of Hillman Imp and Jaguar cylinder heads coming off, after just a night doused in coke but how about bike wheels ?

I use molasses when it is converted into bundy rum

I worked in Bundy in my youth and was involved in making a special converter for that stuff.

   Yeah bit partial to the olde Bundy meself ! but it doesnt seem to help fix me rusty spoke's, come to think of it nothin gets done but a bit  lip service

9 parts water to 1 part molasses is what I use. If there are no chips in the paint it should be OK, if it's scratched or chipped it may lift. DON"T put magnesium in there though or it will dissolve! You probably won't have to do anything to them other than hit 'em with a pressure washer. Steel wool & polish if you want, but I've pulled them out, washed them off, fitted bearings, seals etc and used them. Everyone I've shown is amazed at the results and has gone straight home to make their own tank. It stinks, so keep it a long way from the house. Love the molasses tank!
