CR400 73 to 74 differences?
There was a big difference between the 73 and 74 cr250's
Are there similar big differences between the 73 and 74 400's?

The 73/74 Husky 400's are basically the same bike. I think they even have the same engine series no.(2030)
The main difference is the exhaust pipe. 73 had the older style pipe with a separate hand grenade style muffler. The 74 had a pipe with an inbuilt repackable silencer spark arrestor.
The 74 lost the lower frame mount for the pipe and the threaded insert in the frame to hold the rear of the tank.

Thanks, that's helpful -- it was a bit confusing -- don't know much about huskies (or perhaps I should say don't know much about pre-75 generally because I only owned and raced one late 60s Bultaco and that was before I "went on to other things" 8))

I'm considering the CR 400 that the West Australian fellow has got advertised -- I know it's a steep price but it looks like well done and I have certainly spent more than that on projects that have not turned out as nicely as that looks.

But I have some concerns about whether the bike will be eligible for pre-75 here in Victoria because I see that the Classic Scramble Club for example say that the exhaust system should generally follow the line of the original and of course the CR 400 that I'm looking at has got one of those "up to date" pattern exhaust systems that "gets big and fat" pretty quickly.

So, do you (or anybody) know whether or not that exhaust would make that bike ineligible for pre-75 generally.  (You can see that I'm pretty new to this because I don't even know the basic things about eligibility)

Also the seller tells me that the bike was set up in the States by somebody who took a lot of care to get it right -- that is good news -- but he goes on to say that there has been an updated reed valve installed which by my recollection usually means that the piston / intake port timing has been changed which usually all gets matched in with the pipe so that if I was to change back to standard pattern pipe (to meet the eligibility requirements) would I be left with a way out of tune engine?

Any comments would be much appreciated.

The pipe wouldn't be a problem for pre '75, not so sure about the reed.

Looks like a after market GEM or DH reed, reeds are ok for pre 75 as the 74 250 mag came out with one, the Watsons run reeds on their 400's

G day Gippslander ,The bike in question is one of the many in the stable myself and old boy have .if the question of originality is an issue ,we have a 74 400 done as original spec in the exact of the one you are interested in .It is running complete original equiptment .
The fancy 400 and the original were done to complement each other .
I will let the old boy know and he may be able to forward you some pics of the original .
Stay low and fly      cheers Boots
