KTM 495 REAR SHOCK

I have finally plucked up courage to start the resto on my 83' KTM495 but i am perplexed (hows that for a word) about why the rear end seems so short compared to the front end. When I measure from knobbly to under fender (with wheel fully extended) the measurement is only 290mm and from spec sheets its supposed to have 330mm. When I look at photos on the web other 83' models look much taller at the back. i am wondering if the wp rear shock has had a spacer inserted under the shock piston? or maybe its an enduro shock which also might just have the spacer. Can anyone expand on this? maybe Walter? I will be getting the shock fully overhauled but need that extra rear end travel. I will be interested in the YSS piston for this shock..

Asuming you have a WP 4681    then the 1988 piston and Seal block  will be a better option . Because the rebound adjuster set up is not based on a needle and seat  principle. We still have all those 4681 parts if needed. At the same time check if your stroke is correct . ( the one on the shock I mean ) ;D

Walter what should the stroke be? and is that measured as if the bump rubber was not there?

You never include the bumpstop , the exact spec sheet on this model I would have to dig up , But I think it was 122 mm

Tony,
The spring could have seen better days. When you have the bike standing, how far can you lift the rear guard up before the rear wheel comes off the ground? If it comes up pretty much straight away, the shock is to short for some reason, if you can lift it up another 100mm or so before the wheel comes up, then maybe the spring is knackered.(or the wrong rate)
