CR 500 cylinder dirty studs
« on: July 10, 2010, 05:25:54 pm »
Hi there husky experts I am a new kid on the block when it come to repairing Huskys so I have a question for the experts.

On pulling the cylinder of my newly acquired (lethal weapon) 1983 CR 500 I notice there was lots of baked on mud around the cylinder studs, it makes it dam hard to get the cylinder of.

So what's the trick when I put it back together so it will be easer next time.  HL

I just had the same problem with my 74CR 400,while lifting the engine had to flog the barrel studs, soak in penetrine, flog, prise, vacuum, soak, flog for about three days.Without getting any of it down in the bottom end.
Haven't had the barrel off for about ten years.
The trick which I have used for years on my other bikes is to install O rings on your studs before you put the head back on.
Depending on how much room you have sometimes I use two per stud to get a good seal(the head should squash them down)
Clean the studs up and give them a good coat of Neverseize.

Dead right Moto, I was lucky enough to have the guru himself, Bill Watson, cast his wand over my '74 WR400 last year, and he had the same problem : 35 years of accumulated crap in the stud holes. He did the same : WD40, prise, WD40, prise, for three days. the answer is, O rings upon reassembly....or lots of WD40 after each day out in the crap... ;)
Nostalgia's not what it used to be....

Thanks Moto, O rings had crossed my mind as well, sounds like they are the go, so its of to the bearing service next week for some O rings and neverseize.  HL
