XL 175 engine to CR 125m chassis
« on: August 15, 2010, 04:33:50 pm »
Hey

Has anyone successfully placed an XL 175 engine, 76-78, into a 74 cr 125 chassis without large amounts of mods required?
An option is doing a conversion but would like to know the details before I have a go at it.

cheers

May be able to get a rolling chassis only and looking at fitting an XL 175 motor into it.

I rode my mates orange XL round a fair bit in the day (and a 75 CR125) and they were one of the sweetest packages I've ridden. Bit like the XL250 into CR250 frame, can't think of why, but plenty did.

Its normaly best to blend the two frame together useing the bottom of the XL frame, Kick starter and foot pegs are a problem, plus mounting the carby on the side port XL motor's is a pain, The last trick XL I built I used a heavly modify XL frame and fitted CR running gear, got the wieght under 100kg.

Hey Pete, you still got that crazy fire breathing SL125? I nearly went blind from the exhaust fumes at Condo one year!

If your not set on the engine, i would go with a XL / SL125 engine instead of the XL175. A lighter engine and a lot easier to get decent power out of, you can get them out to 230cc. There are a lot of after market bits available for them.
I've built more than a dozen of these engines over the last couple of years and they scream! Had a go at doing a 175 and couldn't find decent pistons etc.
One of the engines I built was used in a classic race against CR125M's etc.... it was quicker in a strait line
Looking fo a TZ750 anyone with any leads please PM

I still have it Firko, I put it back together after it was stripped at the Nats in '98 (124cc) but it doesn't seem as strong, I think I need Len Norris to degree cam in again. Dave and I have a shed full of those things, and 2 sheds full of destroyed parts. The Griffith club had a series just for SL,CT based bikes, we 24 riders at a dirt track club day one year. Those little engines go to 210cc real easy but that one Lenny built was the fastest at 124cc.My XL350 has had a rebirth and is a bit smaller,- and faster,- weird.

Hey Mick22

Was the XL 125 motor in a cr chassis? Sounds like it may be a good option.

Mine was still just in a SL chassis, but there are a few around in CR chassis. The SL / XL 125 engine in a CR chassis makes a nice bike but be prepared for a lot of mucking around, the countershaft on any of the early 4 strokes is just in the wrong place for CR conversions. I'll try and find the links- there are some good photos on the net of conversions.

Jonesy's got three full Yoshumura stage 3 SLs a 125 and 2 150 somethings and the littlun' works the best. Of course his are mild compared to yours but they were hot shit when they were built back in the early 70s. One of them's in his little purple Rickman.

I would go for an SL125 and spend you time on a nice suspension upgrade and motor work.

These were pretty good item back in their day and could give a TC 125 or DT a run for their money. Hmmm now if I could just find my old SL  ::)
