OK, so everyone head over to the very rarely hit Kawasaki room where I shall ask which KX500 was the best  ::) ::)

An 88 or a US model 89 with the 46mm conventionals . EASY NEXT QUESTION :D

I agree with frostype400. The 450 was a great looking bike. Just DONT ride it :o. In the 500s I like the 86 or 87.

Collectible,I'd reckon the 450,or 480.
But,being the owner of an '88 CR500,I like the simplistic race bred look of this model.
Also the power is quite smooth,and for a big bore bike,its a good mannered bike. Point it and thats where it goes,the suspenion is top notch too.
Wether or not its collectible is up to the individual.

                                                      Cheers,Mark.
I used to drink a lot.
I still do,but I used to,too.

Let's see what the Nancy Boys have to add to this:

81 = 450 = pooh.
82 = 480 = much better.
83 = 480 = much refined (particularly suspension and 5-speed).
84 = 500 = better again, still air-cooled.
85, first of the water cooled. Bulk HP by most claims.
86, I believe just an update of the 85, power spread widened.
87, gets rear disc and (more importantly) cartridge forks.
88, just refinements.
89, crappy USD forks, and  think the crappy delta-link rear end.

Thats fair but I am bias 86 for this black duck...........

 Nathan, I think you have hit the mark.However, for the most part the CR500RE has to be the exception.
Aircooled, front disk , sensible front suspension, the best shade of red ,AND CAN SHRED A NEW REAR TYRE IN  10 MINUTES OF OPERATION  :o :o :o :o

The most collectable CR 500 (for Australia) will be one of the registerable models (was it an "E"?) brought out a little while ago. Try and find one let alone buy one for under 7-8 grand.
