4 Speed gear box

Had A reason to play with the selector fork support shaft on my side piper yesterday and
noticed that the shaft is supported in the right hand case that has a through hole,
ie open to the countershaft side ,
there appears to be no seal here, is that correct

Make sure to cover the shaft hole with sealant to stop the shaft from moving outwards. Also check the stop screw is holding the shaft as it can go though the clutch side as well if the wrong screw is fitted or the shaft has been fitted  with the groove on the RH side

that exactly what happened, retaining screw  got damaged and shaft moved side ways,
causing shift issues,
have machined new retaining screw and ground in an "o" ring grove on  out board end of shaft to help seal,
will also do as you  and Jim suggest and put sealant on outside ,

Another trick is if you have the clutch assy off ,drill both side of the case web across the shaft hole fit a split pin  this will stop the shaft moving out of the LH side .Just a CZ peace of mind tip
