Jetting after removing restrictors

What jetting changes, if any, do you think i'd be looking at after taking the restrictors out of my 81 PE175 pipe?

There was only restrictor washers in the inlet manifold and or exhaust manifold. These would have been long gone 25 years ago by now and you wont still have them fitted. You will only have the flat mesh spot welded on the inside of the pipe walls, a couple bits about 30cm long x 10mm wide. They are not actually a restrictor, its just sound deadening material to cut down the pipe resonating sound so they got through ADR's. Biggest gains for low $ are opening up the muffler and the air box lid at the sacrifice of allowing water/dirt to get on the filter more easily.

leith i thought they had a restrictor welded in pipe
in the up pipe section or rear cone not sure
geoff m should know ???

Lots of Suzuki pipes have restrictors in them you can usually see about 4 or 5 spotwelds in a ring around the pipe just at the junction of the belly /baffle cone

True, but the later PE pipes I have opened usually are as described by Leith. a wire-mesh affair with some sound deadening gunk, mainly to stop the ringing and general racket.  The mesh is probably not a huge performance hit, but the sound deading stuff would be. The early C (1978) pipes had huge washers inserted to shut them up for noise. Terrible things that everybody immediately removed. The C / N mufflers had a similar (smaller) washer to also keep the noise down - and strangle the engine... The later PE mufflers were not all that bad after repacking.

Only the pre 80 models (79 aswell Luke???) had big disc restrictors welded in the pipes. The Clymer manual shows this. 80 onwards just has a washer attached right near the inlet end as it comes out the motor which was easily removed. The stuff under the mesh burns out when you light it up.

What would be the best/safest way of burning the goop out of the pipe? Or am i better off cutting it open?

Paul,

I have used the mob at Brendale - Heat Kleen, just near Craigs place (Northside MC), cost is about $20.  Pipe looks like sh@t after but it will weigh a whole lot less.  Have had 4 pipes done there now, all good.

I always use the oxy/acetylene, get the insides at one end alight then use compressed air hand gun to blow air along the pipe to push the burning carbon along the full length of pipe. You will see the pipe change colour on the outside a bit and that way you can see where abouts the flames are. There will be a lot of smoke and some sparks so do it where nothing can catch alight wear safety glasses and a mask if you don’t want to breath in the smoke. It works really well. Did some chrome road bike mufflers 2 weeks ago before they went to the chrome strippers. Then they will come back to be cut open or actually un soldered as they are 3 cones/pieces soldered together. Then the dents can be removed, then put it back together again and back to the chromers for new chrome.
