Painting the 78/79 Honda CR250 - help required please
« on: November 18, 2007, 01:05:31 pm »
I've been stripping a 78 CR250 engine and am at the stage it can be blasted in preparation for paint and am wondering if anyone knows if you can sidestep the etch primer and paint two pack successfully straight onto the engine which it appears was what Honda did.

Information about paint selection , colours (including frame and swingarm) and any other stuff would be appreciated - and what about the paint for the barrel and head - I know in the wonderful world of Maico we have a great choice with heatproof black but the Honda has me a little tossed?

Over to the panel of expert listeners for the guts, thankyou!!!

See you at the back of the pack in '08  ;)

You will probably gets lots of different replies to this but the path I took was to have the frame etc powdercoated Dulux Signal red after what was very good advice. This will include the etch primer for you.  Good close clolour to Tahitian Red that Honda used.  On this web site is another member Red Alert - Rod - he is a professional graphics painter and did my motor, tank and side panels for me.  His colour matching to what I had was awesome.  The only request I added to the equation was that the motor colour have 2 levels of "shine" taken out of it by adding some matting agent as the ones I had seen were too shiny from what I remembered - the finished product was great.  I think he uses a GM red as a base and mixes from there.  I have heard of taking your plastics in and having paint mixed from there to match but dont know how good this will be.

Hope this helps.

Hey there Brad!

Yep , Mr Eclectic, that's me, lol !!!

I've had the CR sitting around for while now and it's time to make some progress with it. I figure it's a similar colour so it shouldn't be too hard to make the moves in the engine dept and the rest is some of the sweetest trick bits I could find so it promises to be something special when it's done.

The poor CR has to share the workshop with a bunch of German fools but once they all figured out they were from the countries of the Axis forces everyone was happy, lol!

Don't know where Sweden figured in WW2 but a Husky '75 250CR in a million bits completes the collection of dirt while in another room there lurk the Italians (yeah OK they were also on the Axis side but would hardly count eg the surrender at Bardia, lol) - but sadly all are those shitbox Ducatis that kept me away from dirt riding for way too long now that I look back - Oh well, all being well I should be able to ride into the walking frame era and beyond to make up for it !!!

Now back to the CR colours - have you got any suggestions to add to the other helpful posters as I want to get things moving asap?

Cheers mate,

Dave Mac  :)

Hey Dave, there are a few options. As for the motor, I've had paint mixed to identical specs as the original and also mixed the same colour but glossy. The gloss paint actually looks shit hot and is also a lot easier to keep clean. I paint it with 2 pack straight on to the sand blasted surface on have never had a problem, even with the barrell and head.
I've also got a NOS frame and got some paint colour matched to the same colour and once again, painted the 2 pack straight on to the bare metal, no problems. Any automotive paint shop worth his keep can colour match for you.

Thanks all for the leads on the paint.

Now Magoo, do I take it you lay the paint down straight onto the blasted alloy without etch primer (I and sure that is how the little Nippers did it when they manufactured them?

Looking forward to seeing that beast on the track next year too.

Cheers all,

Dave Mac
