XL175 K3 1976 Twin :- do they exist ? is is it myth
« on: December 23, 2009, 09:30:54 pm »
i was speaking to a bloke tonight who has some old bikes and he said he would dearly love a rare XL175 K3 1976 Twin cylinder Honda.

i have never heard of such a bike? SL350 twin yes but XL175 twin?

he said he saw some back in 1976 and they were twins without an electric starter and had larger diameter forks than a standard XL175.

were they a mock upr oad model small capacity twin? anyone?

Never heard of one!     Maybe he's thinking of CB 175?

I've seen a couple of SL175s over the years, so I assume that were available as a new bike in Australia.
They used to pop up on Ebay every so often.

I am 99.9999% sure that the first XL175 replaced the SL175 on dealer's floors. I'd be even more surprised if they kept the even fatter, even less impressive SL around until 1976.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

The earlier SL175 was the twin Hoony. It came in models K0 K1 K2 K3 and like SL350 twin was long gone from the line up by 76.  The CB175 twin roady and GL175 (Agi bike) where still available after 1975. Perhaps the GL with its upswept pipes is what he remembers. Cheers mate :-)
I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Everything Tim said. Perhaps your mate's lost half a decade somwwhere Hoony. ;D
Not many people remember but the late, great Geoff Eldridge started out on a '68 CL175 twin. It turned him off 4 strokes forever. :D

Great , thanks for the info guys.

now the big Question anyone got a runner ?

the bloke i know wants the last model (XL175 twin as Nathan eluded to) and i would love to find one for him as a trade for a certain Bulty he has that i'm after for a mate. the Bulty has been in storage as a basket case (but mostly complete for probably 30 years.

PM me if you can help, no rush for this one as the Bulty is not going anywhere till the 175 twin is found.

Don't believe there was ever an XL 175 twin. I owned an SL 175 for a couple of years and although not a great trailbike due to its weight and bulkiness, it had a sort of quirkiness about it. Made a great sound and would rev sky high with a very linear power delivery and very little vibration. A bloke used to race one in VMX in NSW about ten years ago. Had a lot of engine mods, Elsinore bodywork and was quite quick on grasstrack events. Wish i still had mine.

The XL175 - 1976 model was a single cylinder motor, not a twin.
