Finally got to ride the Monty H7

Completed the rebuild today  . It started 5th kick and ran like a champion  . Great engine with the reed valve. Anyway I am happy with it  .  Now to start wrecking it again  .

YES ah the kick start  . The one on it is perfect except for shot chrome. New ones are a fortune and then only copies which are not as good as the originals so I decided to stick with the original although it is going to eat away at my pride every time I use it.

This is what happens when someone that does not know what they are doing tries to weld a disk brake caliper mount to Mag. alloy.

Only ridden a few k's today on relatively easy ground, they seem possibly a little heavily sprung or possible backing of the compression damping may help. The rear geometry is almost exactly the same as a late model Maico twin shock. Still too early to tell exactly. The bike is heavier than a Maico and I guess I am heavier than average (dam it  ) so I'll wait and see. They seem to be a good match to the front end for springing.

Damn, damn, damn! I've been toiling away at mine this very minute but it's just not quite......
My biggest drama is that with the much larger than standard rear sprocket, the chain tends to want to eat into the bottom of the standard guide. I've solved it for now however I've had to theiv a guide off one of the 414's (which fit wayyy too nicely). I've gone one tooth larger on the counter-shaft to hopefully bring the gearing somewhere back near standard.

Other than that, mine's nearly ready to roll.......

(Mine starts second kick every time cold)

BTW I had one of my kick-starters re-chromed and it came up a treat. No more having to be embarrased in front of your Vinduro mates Greg......

I'm not really sure how much the reed valve improves the engine although it does have great power all the way through the rev range and is very strong around 1/4 - 1/2 throttle

Started the H7 from cold today only took 1/2 a kick with my still spindly broken leg wearing cheap rubber thongs . Once slightly warm I just had to think about starting it and suddenly it was idling away on the centre stand

The Speedo mounts in a ............................Montesa H7 Speedo mount which is not dissimilar to a Montesa H6 Speedo mount but a lot different to a 1957 Matchless 500 sppedo mount

It actually just pushes into a rubber thing(now your in familiar territory) /bung which then fits like a grommet into an alloy plate which mounts under the steering head centre nut. The rubber bung is shown below. My stash of monty parts had a new speedo, a used speedo, two rubber bungs but only one mounting plate. If you need any let me know.

Unfortunately all the Spanish brands of the late '70s and early '80s ran head first into financial peril once the economy failed and all protection was removed. Montesa was the 'lucky' one in that they did survive in some form.

They were "lucky' if you're into trials bikes (like Greg here). It was pretty much the end of the line for the rest of their stuff 
I ended up bending some plastic to suit (the speedo mount). I'm pretty happy with it but if it cracks into a million pieces you'll be hearing from me.

And what a pain in the arse this resto's been. Last bloody Euro Enduro I ever do. Parts have been a night-mare (and expensive) and now I'm too shit-scared to ride the bloody thing in case I break something and have to get a clairvoyant in again to track down the parts. No Sir. This un's going straight to the pool room!

Right. Anybody got a nice little IT 250 I can do some Vinduro's on?

what year model xr250 sprocket fits and does it fit early h6 and vb 250s

I dont know what year they are but they are the ones with the 'chunkier' splines. Just go into your local Honda shop with an Monty one and you'll find a match pretty quick. You still have to use the boss off an old sprocket for it to fit properly though. They fit VB's and H6's
