has anyone had a go at modifying an early xl250/350 frame for lay down shocks or long travel suspension?

Most likely yes , but I have not seen on the early ones racing, as those modifications immediately preclude them racing in pre75 class.
I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

this is later XL250S frame but no reason not to whip up a monoshock, class eligibility notwithstanding

I fitted an XL350 swing arm to my 72 XL250, bolted straight on, it's 25mm longer than the standard XL250 swing arm, top shock mounts are in the standard position.

so does the 350 swingarm put the shocks at a different angle? i would be interested to see a conversion where the top shock mounting point is lower than standard

Yep CR250 forks, I also have 76 350 & it steers way better than that with higher back end giving less rake.
It also fells lighter to ride?
