WA Grand National?
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:07:53 am »
Can anyone tell me for sure if WA ran an annual Grand National in the 70s?

I know Vic did, but did WA?

We had MX National Championships at Manjimup in 1973 or 74 and Wanneroo in 1979. Is that what you are after….

No Alison

Vic ran a 30 lap feature race ea year called a Grand National. It wasn't a national title but it did attract I'state riders, tho most of the entrants seem to have been Vic.

I'd never heard of one run in any other state till recently when someone said they tho't the race they won in WA was a Grand National.

Just trying to confirm or otherwise whether it was rightly called a Grand National

A big one held at Southern Cross, out towards Kalgoorlie, got a few internationals like Jimmy Aird, Roger Harvey and the like, that was known as King of the Cross.... can't say I've heard of any title resembling a Grand National, but yammiefan will confirm if he drops in.... ;)
Nostalgia's not what it used to be....

JC:No go here--will have to go talk to HVA1   ;)  :D
His father is the oldest and longest consistent rider in WAMX.That I'm aware of.  8)

Like the bikes from the era the trophies also end up in the back of peoples sheds and on rubbish tips.
Our MX club combined with Wagin,Narrogin,Manjimup and Bunbury which ran an Interclub series in the 80's and this series has started up again in the last 4 odd years, but that old trophy can't be found.   :(
cheers

Brian tells me they never ran such a race in WA. Thanks all. (It has relevance to the Alron story)
