Whats the best metal filler/putty

What is the best metal based filler or putty that has good adhesion to bare metal and is fairly hard and resistant to abrasion? Eg 'Quick steel' type stuff that you mix 2 parts together. Is there any brands better than another that work well?

I've always had excellent results with the original QuikSteel, made in the USA by AFC International, and never go to a meeting without a tube in the toolbox. However, there is also a cheaper proprietary brand one available, which is white rather than grey, and is available from Bunnings, Super Cheap etc which I use at work, and that works just fine as well. Bloody handy stuff, for sure...

The original.........Devcon liquid steel........you can get it with stainless,aluminium,and all sorts of additives

I have always used JB Weld or Devcon, Leith.  Never had any dramas.

In the workshop its Devcon but in your bum bag you want some Knead-it, a two part epoxy that you rub together and make a plug out of. Can be used on engine cases to stop oil leaks and even exhausts to plug a hole. leave it long enough and you can drill and tap it!

I have the Knead it stuff Liquid metal etc etc the need it stuff works great but it depends what finish you want I suppose you have a hole in front of the front sprocket on a pe? I have a couple of cases that are like that thanks Michael.

Liquid Steel for me, I hand a branch got through my rad on a GasGas 250, dumped all the water it took out two tubes, let it dry out ,repaired with liquid steel & it's still going today two years later with no leaks.

I have seen the Quicksteel website http://www.afcinternational.com.au/myweb/products/quiksteel_epoxy_putty.htm  and it seems to claim its the 'original and the best' so i might go with that.

are these 'liquid' metal types actually liquid? i dont want anything real runny

What is the type of Devcon you can use on plain steel or chromoly?

Check what the manufacurers list, Loctite, Devcon etc. They usually have a product for different metals and situations.

I'm not proud of this but this is how good some of this stuff is.
20+ years ago a mate in NZ had an ISUZU truck (about 6.5L diesel) and due to lack of correct coolant it corroded through the water jacket/ cylinder wall on #1 cylinder and put a hole in the liner. The local agent replaced the liner and filled the hole in the cylider wall with SILICONE! . Needles to say it leaked in a few hours.
He was desperate to get the truck back on the road for two weeks til the new replacement truck arrived so we decided to try so Loctite Metal set.
The hole was directly under a frost plug under the water pump so off with the pump and the head and out with the liner. I under cut the corrosion hole which was about 30mm dia and fitted a new liner. I put a layer of High temp metal set against the liner and a layer of water proof over that. We left it for a day and reassembled the motor.
It was a patch up job but it ran for 18 months up til the time I came to OZ, I have no idea of how much longer it ran after that.

I reckon pick the right product and prepare it well.

JB Weld is the best 2 part epoxy and all the 'knead-together' sticks seem to be similar in performance.

P1... is generaly used in construction industry, and this is what I use.

There is another product called " Ferropre"    2 pack product that mixes with water, drys rock ard in about 3 hours ( QLD sunshine )
