Tech Talk / Timing and TDC for a RM
« on: August 04, 2016, 09:50:53 pm »
Hi All,
So I have my new HPI ignition for my 81 RM250.   The instructions say ignition should be set at 2mm before Top Dead Center, but these are generic instructions that suit bikes across the board.   There is no mention of TDC in my manual does anyone know the  specs for a RM ?

I have read some stuff on line that pushing it out a bit will give more bottom end and less will allow it to rev more, but obviously there are limits.   Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Suzuki / HPI ignitions [Horse power ignitions in the UK]
« on: July 23, 2016, 02:25:23 pm »
Hi All,
I'm looking at a new ignition from HPI in the UK for my 81 RM250.   They are cheaper than PVL [around 315.00 Aus plus postage] and look impressive they have a choice of 2 power curves one of which I hope will give me a bit more low down power.

Has anyone had any experience with these ?  They don't have a dealer in Australia but are popular in Europe.

Thanks

I have just restored one, it was in reasonable shape to begin with so rode it for a year before doing a bottom up rebuild.    Parts are available just harder to find.   All your seals, bearings and many other parts are still available from Suzuki in Australia so always try there first.

Anything else is available on the net.   I even found a never used NOS set of center cases on the net.

pm me and I will send you me email address as I may be able to help.

They were one of the best RMs ever so worth persevering.

Suzuki / 81 RM250 Clutch is heavy
« on: March 04, 2016, 12:52:56 am »
Hi All,
I have just rebuilt my 81 RM250 and everything seems to be ok, except the clutch is really heavy.   I have disconnected the cable and that seems ok,  they are the same springs that are within spec and  I have oiled the plates.  I  take the springs off and its all good, nothing sticking and all ok.    There is a little bit of grooving but not a lot, I have seen much worse.

I have never experienced this before, I'm waiting on the wheels to come back so I haven't started her up yet.

Any Ideas ?

Pete

Hi All,
I'm about to put my cases back together and they are pretty good but not perfect.    I have new gaskets but I'm tempted to use gasket goo as well, just to make sure.   Is this a good idea and what is the best goo ?

Hi Dave,    I have been on here for almost 12 months after a lengthy break from the sport.    I also have a RM250X I raced it this year [well I rode around while the others raced] and have just stripped it down to complete the restoration.   Parts are hard to find here in WA but hopefully you will have more success,  there is also a story about a 250X restoration in the next issue of VMX magazine due out early next year,  so make sure you get a copy.   You will also be surprised how many parts Suzuki can supply,  so far i have been able to get all the seal / bearings etc,  it just the big things they don't have.    Use Alpha Sports or someone like that to find part numbers.

Hi All,
Does anyone know what the max rebore is for a 81 250 ?    Mine is a smidge over 68mm and there is no marking on the piston to say what over size it is.  I can fit a .130 mm feeler gauge between the piston and cylinder wall.

Thanks

I got a printer to make up mine with my number on them.   Any printer should be able to do it, just give the the dimensions.

I will be interested in hearing how the single sided airbox goes,  I'm thinking of getting one for my 250X.   Is it from Vintage Suzuki ?
