General Discussion / Re: Our future
« on: March 12, 2014, 11:57:55 pm »
Electric bikes are the future - the latest Stealth bikes (built in Melbourne) as an example - silent, very fast, 80km/h plus, no fuel just recharge after a 100km ride , low running cost, good suspension with upgrades available, awesome fun.  You can ride where bikes are not allowed and no one knows you were there.  It seems the advent of the booming 4 stroke MX bike which can be heard from 3 or 4  km away has hastened the demise of the tracks close to urban sprawl. The two smokers sound did not seem to carry so far.  Nothing could beat the sound of a gate full of two stroke 500's  blasting off the startline. Those were the days.

For Sale / Sebac Italian Shocks
« on: July 14, 2013, 01:40:50 pm »
Pair of Italian Sebac shocks in need of full rebuild and shafts rechroming. These shocks worked very well back in the day - they have the two stage spring rates and are approx 445mm eye to eye. They actually look quite good but for the rust on the shafts.  RADS shocks can rebuild them easily. $50 plus postage or pickup in Brisbane.  PM me for photos.

For Sale / Ohlins shock to suit 89 onwards KX500 or 89 KX250
« on: July 14, 2013, 01:36:35 pm »
I have an Ohlins shock to suit the 1989 onwards Kx500, it will also suit the 1989 KX250 and maybe some other KX250 years - i am not sure. Shcok was working well when taken off bike but I would advise a re-oil and regas to freshen it up. Condition is good and it does not appear to have any leaks  $450 plus postage or can be collected in Brisbane.  PM me for photos.

Kawasaki / Re: Will KX420 barrel fit on KDX400?
« on: July 12, 2013, 10:04:05 pm »
I stand to be corrected on this, but I think that the 79 KDX400 cases are different to the cases on the 1980 KDX400 - in 79 the KDX400 cases were designed much like enlarged KX250A5 cases and used a bracket to mount the rear of the motor to the swingarm pivot bolt. For 1980 the KDX was upgraded to use KX420 cases which had the swingarm pivot bolt running through the back of the crankcase. In addition the 1980 KDX400 used different gear ratios. The cylinder heads are interchangeable but they are different - the KDX400 has a bore of 80mm and a compression ratio of 6.8:1,  while the KX420 is 83mm with a slightly higher compression ratio of 6.9:1 - at first glance the heads are externally the same , but the squish bands differ, and the KX squish is 3mm wider to allow for the increased bore size.

For works bike fans and green tech buffs, Brad Lackeys open class SR works bike that he campaigned in the GP's in 1979 actually used 79 KDX400 cases with the back of the cases cut down and then rewelded up with a large billet alloy lug with a collar  to take the swingarm bolt pivot of the then all new works Unitrak.  The cases were modified to take cylinders and cranks with capacities from 390cc to 476cc with many in between, through the season.

As a footnote -  Brads 1980 works GP bike displaced the full 499cc , and had special sandcast cases with the swingarm pivot point integrated into the cases of what was Kawasakis first full capacity SR500.  it was a very special one off hand made bike built just for Brad, and only two were built. However the overall design, including the engine, was successful and the following year, modified and improved versions of these engines with sandcast cases then found their way into the 1981 SR500 works bikes which were made in very small numbers and in Oz as many will know, were ridden by Anthony Gunter and Trevor Williams in 1981 to great effect.  These then directly gave rise to the design of the engines used in the first production KX500's in 1983.  So the humble KDX400 has some heritage and influence on history.

Yes it will, the KX420 has a larger bore. You need to change to the KX420 head as well, as the bore diameter and head squish bands are different.

Wanted / Old style Renthal bar pad
« on: May 21, 2013, 10:04:51 pm »
Looking for the older style Renthal bar pad as used through the 80's and 90's with the Renthal branded cover made from fabric, unlike the current versions which are made from plastic vinyl type stuff.  PM me or call on 0438 188402  Cheers

I have a 1981 XT250 which i restored as new - only done 5000km since new - its the model with red tank and sidecovers, and white guards, new everything just about, new plastics, spokes, tyres, seat cover. Bolts replated, no expense spared, looks almost new and runs beautifully and starts in two or three kicks every time. It was a one owner bike when i bought it and had hardly been used. Cannot seem to work out how to add photos here, so if anyone is interested i will send photos and you can make me a sensible offer. It is currently registered in Qld and i use it every couple of weeks to go to the shops or visit locally. Real trip down memory lane, its amazing how many people stop me and say they had one of them back in the good old days.

For Sale / 1978 Kawasaki KX125 A4
« on: August 11, 2012, 07:38:48 pm »
My 1978 KX125 A4 is on ebay - as anyone from the era will remember, these were and still probably are, perhaps the rarest and most exotic of the early evo KX's  - very light and very fast. with lots of trick little touches only found on the works bikes of the times. Knowing most 125's there will be very few of these left alive. I have only ever seen one other.  PM me with any questions.
