I think 5 might be Paul Mahony. Also rode speedway sidecars (1 in particular I remember was a BMW at Sydney showground) His son rode one of the king of Nepean event over the last 3 years or so.

The night I saw Paul at the showground his passenger fell off and he still won the race. (got disqualified though)

Hi can some one help me find the right xl500 brake shoes.
I had to purchase special order so no returns.
The shoes I got were rear H324 (EBC) and front 318 (EBC).
The rear are just wrong they have like a locating pin on the fixed end and I need half round.
Is the catalogue wrong?
The front aren't right either but I will have to take the wheel off to explain better.
Its an XL500 S 1979 first model pretty sure its all original

Hi Steve
Step 1 Ring Burwood Police with vin or eng number.
If it's been registered before they can tell you.
If its 20 yrs Blue slip required ( I have used AVATI Mechanical repairs) They are in the BP servo at Burwood Heights on Liverpool rd.

Let me know if you have any problems I am going through the same the same thing with my xl500.

Well there is a welcome relief, turn out the main problem was dirty connections on the main fuse.

Thanks for the help guys

Ok thanks Doc
I'm pretty sure I have all those bits.
I didn't think the coil and cdi would be different as they don't take battery power at the moment.
Do you think the pulse pick up on the other side of the engine as well Doc?

Thanks

So my plan is to have 1 road registered and build 1 for flat track and 1 for mx.
I think I suffer from a bit of hoarders disease because I also have klx 250's (1 complete and running and maybe another 2 in bits and pieces )witch I am considering using for a suspension graft for the mx 500 version.

I started out looking for an XL 500 I could put on the road.
Found a 500rc for a couple of hundred mostly in milk crates with the standard chewed out head and cam.
So I set to work on ebay and put some feelers out.
Came across an engine in Ipswich Qld with a buy it now of $270 I'm in Enfield Sydney cant pass it so plan a road trip.
In the meantime found a rolling frame out of Lismore $200 that's mine also part of the road trip.
Then late one nite an original 79 model shows up in Wonthagi Vic to good of condition to pass up. That's mine $760 oh well another road trip.
So I head out to pick up the 500 in Vic wow starts easy bit rattley and some oil leaks 2 day trip there and back but it's home.
Around about Yass on the way home I received a text from one of the feelers I put out "hey dude got 2 xl500s come in and have a look

So now I have 5 XL500s and missus is seeing red.
Went up for a Blue slip today and the cables around the steering head have made the compliance plate illegible.
Bloody thing is also blowing headlight bulbs 6V 35/35 there a bit hard to track down now and pricey.
So to the point the 500rc runs 12v can I just change the stator and bulbs to convert from 6 to 12v?

Hi Bill
That's a cracker for $100.
I just checked my 500 damaged one and goes up to 160klm so I guess that would be for a 250sz.
Chris asked first but he isn't interested I will take it, not like I'll be doing more than 120.

Thanks

Hi Chris
You will need to be a more specific as there were two different types.
There is a one piece key hole shape and the separate speedo taco versions.
The one piece is for the first model and the two for sa and sb models which all had 23in wheels.
Only the 500rc with prolink suspension had 21in.
I am also after a 1st model speedo and have spoken with www.japbikespare.com.au Roy Dale who thinks he has some.
Hope this helps

Hi Carl?
I'm not 100% on which Curly is which.
I would have replied to you txt but it would take me a week to write it.
What model 500 are you looking for and do you want a restorer or racer.
I have an S (first model I want to keep) SA, SB and RC.
I total I have 5 with 4 needing heads done up so if you can find out if the guy in Qld still does them we could probably give him a couple of weeks worth of work.
Do you know if Peter Campbell or Chris Dowd have ever done xl heads?

Thanks

PS give your mate my mobile number and I will tell him what I've got.
