Tech Talk / Re: Pyramid parts fork seals
« on: May 09, 2014, 05:41:22 pm »
i used a set of the pyramid fork seals in my YZ250 and ended up removing them for a different brand. my problems with the pyramid seals is they are like plastic and not rubber, they cause really bad stiction when cold and need a lot of force to get them working smoothly. i replaced them with fork seals with double wiper rings, can't remember the brand but these take less effort to get them working. i ended up doing the same with my IT250 and swapped to the double whipper seals.

to give an example with the pyramid seals, if i gently pushed down on the footpeg the rear shock would move while the forks would not unless i used heaps of pressure on the peg.

you wont need spare engines unless you do have 175HP+.
There is definately a problem at the moment with guys spending way too much money on the Period 5 bikes and it's really not going to make them any faster.  Like any class of bike racing, fast guys will be fast on almost any bike, provided it's set up ok, and slow guys will be slow regardless of how many $0000's they spend.
Thats why we all love bike racing  ;)

......If you have deep pockets an unlimited P5 will set you back $100k but have nearly 200hp at the wheel.....

$100K?  :o
you could probably build 5 of my GS1000S's for that, you can build a race ready GSX1100 based bike for well under $10K, or build a 'full race' version for around $30K...
$45K would buy for a hand built Birrell spec Katana, but even these do not have 200hp at the wheel, 175hp is closer to the mark.
or if you really wanted to impress (or over compensate  ;))  then a race ready Harris replica XR69 will cost you $60K..

General Discussion / Re: Moto Gp. Valencia Spain.
« on: November 12, 2013, 10:50:33 pm »
i think for 20 years the Spanish controlled Dorna got tired of watching a never ending line of smart arsed American and Australian riders with no money dominate ' their ' 500cc class, so they came up with a new class with a new set of rules that any rider could win, provided he was on the right bike. Then it didn't matter how good the Yank or Aussie was, there would always be half a dozen cashed up Spainish and Italians buying the now limited supply of factory rides.... unless the riders can bring millions of EURO's they wouldn't get a chance to ride the factory bikes.
As for the fans, well the Spanish and Italian fans will love it and as for the rest, they might never notice how dull and boring GP's have become so long as the Dorna paid TV comentators said it was the greatest racing ever.

Sorry but give me uncontrollable 2 strokes which only GODS can ride, all these motogp classes are shitzen-houzen.... reminds me of F1 about 5years ago

looks like an 82 J model, with the shock under the tank with the rocker arm link.

Someone REALLY wanted a KDX didn't they ::)

cheers Dale.

Most Yamaha owners do ;D

most IT200, 250, 465 or 490 owners would dispute this  ;)

Tech Talk / Re: fibreglass fuel tank
« on: October 30, 2013, 10:07:33 pm »
you shouldn't need to seal or line the inner if the fibreglass tank was made correctly, unless you're using methanol?
i made a kevlar/fibreglass fuel tank for my historic roadrace bike and have been using it for nearly 10 years, i used to use leaded race fuel but lately 98 and it's fine. its survived a couple of big crashes with no signs of weakening. aslong as the tank is made using the correct resin and cured then it will be fine.  i'm planing to make one for my IT250J soon too as there are no plastic ones available.

Wanted / Re: yz465 parts...

the YZ250K kickstart will interchange with the earlier YZ250/465/490's, but the YZ250K kickstart is angled forward, very short and hit's the foot peg earlier.
the best kickstarter to use is the 1981/82 IT250 H/J version, these have a dogleg which allows the kickstarter more than half a turn before hitting the footpeg. i used one on my YZ465/490 engine, basically you get 2 sparks per full kick which makes starting the bigger engine a lot easier. these kickstarters are obsolete but can be found, be prepared to pay a fair bit more for a good one though...

the old man  (Valentino) just embarrasses them all...I think he's 34 or something like that....
How old would Colin Edwards be? It seems like he's been around for 20 years (but I know it's not that long). I wonder what drives him to keep doing it year after year without much success? Most others would have bailed out by now.
He's 39.. He must really love racing to be a former world champ and be happy to run around at the back of the pack on a second rate bike ..!

in motorsport is there such a thing as 'former world champ' ? Edwards won the 2000 and 2002 WSBK championships, nobody can take them away from him... it's not like boxing.. ;)

anyway i thought the whole affair was a joke, you can't blame Bridgstone as they couldn't test on the new surface, the fault is dorna's for coming up with the stupid rules in the first place.
good for spanish TV i guess... and thats the most important thing to them

General Discussion / Re: Honda museum walkthrough
« on: October 16, 2013, 11:50:09 pm »
i went to that Motegi museum in 2001 and 2004. they change the display bikes around,  there was more Superbikes on display then. i remember downstairs near the entrance was an huge wall sized poster of Steve McQueen, plus the Elsinore and the Honda shirt he wore in the TV add. you can watch the mechanics working on different bikes through a large window in one of the workshops.
there's a floor for F1 and Indy cars, plus all the different touring cars and the Jap spec GT500 race cars. up until the late 1990's the museum was at the Suzuka circuit, there's still some bikes and cars there too.

i laughed when i saw that red plate#2 CR with the leading link front end again... what were they thinking?

the YZ490K frame would be ok for the later YZ490 L & N model's and maybe the IT250 & 490 K models, although the YZ rear subframe may be slightly higher and shorter. but definately no good for the 1986 and later 490's.

definately wont suit the water cooled centre port 250's.

Yamaha / Re: YZ250K/L shrouds and sidecovers?
« on: August 04, 2013, 11:48:11 am »
yeah, they should have sold the K with red frames and white shrouds.   "Zack"

Agreed Zack.
Selling the K !  Are you looking for something else or need the money ?

i want to sell the YZ because i've also got an IT250J, the IT is fine to ride vmx and it's also road rego'd so i can do enduros, plus i have 17" rims to road ride too.
even though the YZ250K is faster and handles the bumps better than the IT, i can only ride one of them and usually i'll ride the IT.

Nice 250K Zakk.
I have white plastic radiator shrouds for mine to. Yamaha should have released them like that.
How do you find the DG pipe ? Good top-end pull ?

btw - I think that 490 tank was around 14 litres, not to bad I guess.

yeah, they should have sold the K with red frames and white shrouds. the DG pipe makes good power everyware, although it can still ' fall in a hole' in midrange if you get caught in too high a gear..  also i've got an oversize YZ490J Clarke tank on my IT250J and it holds 15litres.

9 litres would be plenty - Harrow 2013 has the longest Vinduro loop by far - even it was only 55/58km around. I'd prefer the good ergos of a narrower tank.

Could a YZ250J tank & seat be made to fit? Seems like it would solve a lot of potential hassles (no need to buy radiator shrouds, for a start!).

Custom pipe is expected, regardless of which way I jump.

the YZ250/490J tank wont fit an IT K or YZ K frame, due to the different shock position the frames are completely different. the J seat wont fit either.

i originally wanted to build a YZ465/490J (3R5X6) powered IT250K to look like the YZ250K :P ,
so i bought that YZ250K with the idea of fitting the front and rear suspension and all the plastic onto a IT K frame, that way i could use my side port 3R5X6 engine. but after riding the YZ250K, i actually liked it much better than a 490 powered bike.

actually my YZ250K's for sale if anyone's interested  ;D
